Honors, AP, and College Courses
What is an Honors Course?
An honors course is a class that is meant to be a challenge. Honors courses are weighted on a 5.0 scale, since the material is considered to be more difficult. For example, a B in an honors class would be considered to be an A in a regular course.
What is an AP Course?
An AP (Advanced Placement) course is a class that offers college-prep curriculum to students. Some colleges and universities give credits to students who can pass AP tests. AP course grades are weighted on a 5.0 scale, since the material is considered to be more difficult. Students who successfully complete summer and entrance assignments will be eligible for entrance to AP classes.
The AP test is separate from the class (and can be taken even if a student was not in an AP course). This year, the cost to take the test is around $95 per exam. Students who receive free or reduced lunch are eligible for a fee reduction on AP exams.
*Please note that honors and AP offerings are subject to change each school year
College Courses
College courses are more difficult and are taught at a faster pace. One semester of a college course has the potential to count for a year or more of a high school course and is graded on a 5.0 scale. To learn more about college courses, you can visit our concurrent enrollment page here.
