Congratulations, once again, on being admitted to our program. We are delighted to welcome you to the MCC Department!
Below you will find helpful information for a successful transition to MCC.
Registration week is April 20-24, 2026. In the month leading up to registration week, all students are expected to meet with an academic advisor to plan their upcoming semester enrollment and lift the registration hold on their account.
Students can:
Meet with an advisor one-on-one, scheduling via NYU Connect
Join a group registration session.
In order to have your registration hold lifted, you are expected to be prepared:
Review your registration time and date in Albert.
Advisors cannot change your date and time. It is set by the Registrar based on the number of completed credits.
Review your MCC Program of Study (Google Sheet), Degree Progress Report, and cross reference them with the Fall 2026 course schedule in Albert.
Course schedule goes live on March 23, 2026!
You can find your Degree Progress report in Albert under Academics > Planning Tools
Ensure that you read the course notes for pre-requisites.
Utilize the MCC Handbook for pre-registration assistance (you're doing it now!)
Steinhardt CORE Course lists, Stern or Tisch Film /TV or Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music Open Access lists, Study Away Equivalencies, and more can be found on this page.
Join group advising session to get your hold lifted.
Please ensure your Program of Study tab is up-to-date with your current Spring 2026 classes and you have listed your Fall 2026 classes on your Registration Worksheet tab.
Enroll in courses based on your registration time and date!
Registration Week is April 20-24, 2026.
All students are encouraged to enroll in 16 credits per semester. You should be registering for:
Any MCC Core course that you have not yet taken. These include:
MCC-UE 1 Introduction to Media Studies (4 credits)
MCC-UE 3 History of Media and Communication (4 credits)
MCC-UE 14 Methods in Media Studies (4 credits)
MCC-UE 1200 Inquiry Seminar (4 credits, either Fall 2026 or Spring 2027)
Any Liberal Arts CORE course that you may not yet have taken such as:
Quantitative Reasoning Requirement
Physical, Life, or Natural Science Requirement
Foreign Language Requirement
Any Liberal Arts Electives - reminder, any class in CAS!
The MCC Advising Team will also enroll you in SAHS-UE 1 New Student Seminar (0 credits). This seminar will have 1 meeting time in the beginning of the fall semester which you will be notified about, followed by certain assignments to be completed individually and therefore will not require a consistent weekly class time.
Use your program of study and your Degree Progress Report to determine what requirements you have remaining for your degree. For course options, please review the drop down on the right hand side of the page.
Please note, now that you're an MCC student, you are not permitted to take Liberal Studies courses after your transition to Steinhardt.
Steinhardt Approved CORE classes *reminder, NUTR-UE 119 is not an approved Science Course for MCC students*
Approved CAS courses for Quantitative Reasoning, Physical Science, Life Science, and Societies and Social Sciences
All MCC students receive a Google Sheet sent to their NYU email addresses called the Program of Study. This document is how you and your advisor will track your degree requirements.
We also use the Degree Progress Report in Albert! But this sheet can be easier to read for many students.
If the cell is blank and shaded gray, you still need to complete this requirement.
If the cell is white and filled in, you have completed this requirement.
It is your responsibility to fill out the program of study with classes you are enrolled in once you start at NYU. You and your advisor will discuss your individual Program of Study during any advising meetings that are scheduled.
Many of your Liberal Studies Core courses easily transfer to fulfill MCC's Liberal Arts CORE requirements. Students are expected to:
Complete 2 semesters of a single Foreign Language
Complete 2 semesters of college level writing
Complete 16 credits of coursework in Foundations of Contemporary Culture
Complete 12 credits of coursework in Foundations of Scientific Inquiry
Complete 16 credits of Liberal Arts Electives, which can be any course from the College of Arts and Science (CAS)
But how will my LS courses transfer? See ➡️
MCC students must complete 8 credits of a single foreign language (i.e. French I and French II) for graduation. Students must meet Elementary II level proficiency.
If you have no prior knowledge of another foreign language (i.e. fluency in English only), you will need to take 2 semesters of a single foreign language through Elementary II. For example, you will take Elementary Spanish I in the fall and Elementary Spanish II in spring. Upon completion of your language courses, your requirement will be fulfilled.
If you know another language, read on:
Students may be exempt from their Foreign Language requirement based on the following:
Completion of EXPOS-UA 3 (depending on placement), EXPOS-UA 4, and EXPOS-UA 9
If you have taken these courses, you are waived from the Foreign Language Requirement. The 8 credits of Foreign Language will be replaced with your choice of Liberal Arts Electives. You will need to take at minimum 24 Liberal Arts Elective credits to graduate.
AP, IB, or A-Levels scores
AP: If you received a score of 4 or 5 on an AP language test, you have proven your proficiency to the Elementary II level. The remaining 4 credits of Foreign Language will be replaced with your choice of Liberal Arts Electives. You will need to take at minimum 20 Liberal Arts Elective credits to graduate.
IB: If you received a score of 6 or 7 on an IB High Level language test, you have proven your proficiency to the Elementary II level. You will receive 8 credits towards the Foreign Language requirement. You do not need to take additional Liberal Arts Elective credits.
A-Levels: If you received a score of B or higher on an A-Level language test, you have proven your proficiency to the Elementary II level. You will receive 8 credits towards the Foreign Language requirement. You do not need to take additional Liberal Arts Elective credits.
I don't have any AP/IB/A-Levels scores and I didn't take EXPOS-UA 4 or 9, but I know another language! What should I do?
Take the online Placement Test in the language you know proficiently. This test is administered by CAS.
Placement into Elementary [Language] II:
You will need to enroll in this course. Upon completion, your Foreign Language requirement has been met. The remaining 4 credits of Foreign Language will be replaced with your choice of Liberal Arts Electives. You will need to take at minimum 20 Liberal Arts Elective credits to graduate.
Placement into Intermediate [Language] and above:
You will need to complete the in-person Exemption Exam.
The in-person Exemption Exam is administered by CAS. You will need to sign up for a proctored exam here. Please note that new exam dates will be posted throughout the year.
If you receive a passing score, you will be exempt from the Foreign Language Requirement. The 8 credits of Foreign Language will be replaced with your choice of Liberal Arts Electives. You will need to take at minimum 24 Liberal Arts Elective credits to graduate.
