New Student Checklist

We know the University is large and sometimes challenging to navigate. Please review and complete the checklist items below to help you with a seamless transition to NYU and your undergraduate studies:

Fall Freshmen

Please make sure that you plan to register for:

MCC-UE 1.001 (Intro to Media Studies) and a recitation section

AND

EXPOS-UA 1 (Writing the Essay) OR EXPOS-UA 4 (International Writing Workshop I)

For International students registering for EXPOS-UA 4 International Writing Workshop I, please choose from sections 1-39. More seats will become available periodically throughout the registration period for both courses. Both writing courses can be found under The College of Arts and Science course listing in the schedule of classes: Expository Writing (EXPOS-UA).

AND

SAHS-UE 1 (New Student Seminar)

The instructor of the New Student Seminar you register for will become your Primary Academic Advisor.

The other 2 courses you register for are up to you- you can choose something from the College Core Curriculum (Texts and Ideas, Quantitative Reasoning, Physical or Life Science, Societies and Social Sciences, Cultures and Contexts, Expressive Culture, etc.) or a foreign language, or a liberal arts elective (anything in the College of Arts and Sciences).

NYU Steinhardt also offers classes that can fulfill the Liberal Arts requirement. Please review this Liberal Arts Core list for additional options. *Please note: NUTR-UE 119  Nutrition & Health CANNOT be counted to fulfill a science requirement for MCC students.

If you have additional questions or concerns after completing the Online Orientation Portal please review the MCC FAQs below. You can also post questions in the MCC google group which is overseen by our Orientation Leaders, or email comm.advisors@nyu.edu.

Internal Transfers

(Liberal Studies & Across the University - CAS, Steinhardt, etc.)

You should be registering for:

1. Any MCC Core course that you have not yet taken. These include:

2. MCC-UE 1200 Inquiry Seminar (either in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025)

3. Any Restricted Elective courses from this Restricted Electives list.

4. Any Liberal Arts CORE course that you may not yet have taken such as:

5. Any CAS course that can be used for Liberal Arts Electives

6. Any undergraduate class that is open to you in the University which can be used to satisfy the Unrestricted elective requirements of the Program of Study.

*Please note: MCC will be registering all transition students for a New Student Seminar before classes begin in September. This seminar will have 1 meeting time in the beginning of the fall semester which you will be notified about, followed by certain assignments to be completed individually and therefore will not require a consistent weekly class time.

Prior to your Pre-Registration Group Advising meeting please consult MCC Degree Requirements and familiarize yourself with our Departmental website: www.steinhardt.nyu.edu/mcc

Please make sure that you fill out the MCC Program of Study Check List that is being shared with you to the best of your ability and write down the classes that you are planning to take in the second tab of the document titled Registration Worksheet. You will see that your LS courses have already been allocated to their appropriate areas on the MCC program of study checklist.

Please note that your status as an MCC student begins with the Fall semester you were admitted to. You are considered LS students until the beginning of the fall semester and, for the purposes of this registration, will need to register for those core MCC courses that are open for non-MCC majors.

Please also note that LS transition students are not allowed to study away in their first semester in MCC.
