All Education studies majors are highly encouraged, but not required, to participate in an internship. Through internships you learn foundational skills necessary to succeed in an education-related job, you gain networking opportunities, and benefit from mentorship. EDST-UE 1605 Education Studies Internship was designed to provide students academic credit for internships in sites related to education.
Participating in an internship for course credit is an academic undertaking in which students integrate academic theory with practical experience. Assignments are designed for you to engage in critical thinking about your experience working in various education-related capacities, to think analytically about the work of your internship site, and build a portfolio of useful job-related documents. Specifically, the goals for the internship and the accompanying course are for you to:
Acquire valuable experience and exposure to real-world issues in careers in the field of education.
Develop, practice and receive feedback on basic professional skills identified as especially important by employers.
Assemble a portfolio of materials (e.g. biography, online profile, resume) useful for future job search.
Develop networking relationships and gain exposure to different roles and professional opportunities within the education field.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
Reflect on their internship experience and connect that experience to their education-related career goals.
Explain how the internship allowed them to apply their theoretical and/or academic knowledge in a practical setting.
Compile and present a portfolio of career-related documents.
Students must be sophomores, juniors or seniors, in good academic standing (minimum GPA of 2.0). However, students with a GPA lower than 3.0 should consult with their advisor to discuss their workload and the appropriateness of this course. In some cases, the program may not permit a student to register if there are academic concerns. Lastly, students requesting permission to take this course must already have secured or in are in the process of finding an internship placement.
