The pass/fail grading option is not allowed for any major core or area of specialization courses (this includes all students regardless of when you started in our major). If there is an extenuating circumstance, please communicate with your advisor.
Effective Fall 2023: students can take up to 16 credits on a pass/fail basis. Up to 4 credits are allowed to come from one of the two Education Studies restricted electives.
Prior to Fall 2023: students who joined Education Studies before Fall 2023 are allowed to take up to 24 credits on a pass/fail basis. Up to 4 credits are allowed to come from one of the two Education Studies restricted electives.
The Pass/Fail grade request form is available here. It is a student's responsibility to fill out ALL personal and course information. Once you submit the form, it will be directed to the advisor for confirmation, and the advisor will then submit the form to Steinhardt's registration and services office for processing.
IMPORTANT:
Students "pass" the course when they receive a "D" or better. Once the form is processed, students cannot rescind the pass/fail grade option. This means that students cannot change their elected pass/fail status if they discover they are getting an "A" in the course--the transcript will read "P."
If you miss the pass/fail grade request deadline, you can submit an appeal by completing the Late pass/fail appeal request form.
