Graduation Checklist

Semester before Graduating

□ Verify Eligibility and Remaining Requirements

· Review your program’s Advising Matrix and meet with your academic advisor before registering for your last semester’s classes for a Graduation Check

· Ensure that any departmental waivers, exceptions, transfer credit, or substitutions have been approved by your program advisor (you discussed in an advising appointment or emailed with him/her)

Semester You Graduate

□ Apply to Graduate in Albert

· Degrees are not automatically awarded, it’s your responsibility to apply to graduate in Albert

· Once you’ve applied, you may receive an email confirming you applied and notifying you of any outstanding items to prevent you from graduating. You do not need to contact your advisor if you’re still in progress with any courses or requirements, as you cannot graduate until grades are submitted for all your work.

· Once the semester ends, the department automatically audits all graduation applications and approves those who have met the requirements. There is no need to notify your program advisor you’ve applied to graduate, unless you receive an Ineligible to Graduate notice after all your requirements have been completed or more than 4 weeks have passed since the semester ended and you are still showing pending for graduation.

· If your plans change and you no longer wish to graduate the semester you applied for, you must withdraw your application and reapply to graduate for the correct semester. Email: graduation@nyu.edu

□ Are you ready for your next steps?

· Have you updated your resume, attended a workshop, or met with a Career Counselor at Wasserman?

· Applying to graduate school? Remember to request recommendations early.

· Apply for Post-Completion OPT (international students only)

□ Verify on Albert that you are in good financial standing and contact the Bursar if there are any issues.

□ Department Activities

· Many programs have end of semester events for students graduating in December. Check your NYU email for info!

· There will be an ASH Department Celebration the week of Commencement in May. See below for more details.

· Graduation Awards – the department and Steinhardt have awards for outstanding graduates. You’ll be emailed about these in November to nominate a fellow graduate or self-nominate.

Post Graduation

□ Access and NYU Benefits

· Your email address never expires – you get to keep it forever as an alumnus of NYU.

· You will be removed from the current student List Servs and invited to join the ASH Alumni Mailing List.

· Your ID card is valid until the date printed on it. However, your swipe access will be limited; you will not be able to get into most buildings with swipe access including Bobst, fitness centers, and Kimmel Center.

· NYU Student Health Insurance coverage usually ends at the end of the summer semester following spring graduation. For information on if you qualify for an extension or for mid-year graduates, please call the Student Health Insurance Department at: (212) 443-1020 or email health.insurance@nyu.edu.

□ Request a Transcript

· A transcript of your academic work is the most acceptable way to present your academic credentials to potential employers or graduate schools. Please wait until all grades have posted to your Albert account before requesting.

· The University Registrar issues official transcripts, generally within 5 working days from the time of your request. For expedited service or questions, please email: transcripts@nyu.edu.

□ Receive your Diploma – More information here

· Diplomas are mailed to a student’s permanent address about eight weeks after the degree has been awarded. If you haven’t received after 8-10 weeks, contact Graduation Services at: graduation@nyu.edu or 212-998-4800.

· Be sure to verify or update your permanent address on Albert within 2 weeks of graduation.

□ Understand your student loan repayments

· Most loan repayments begin about six months after graduation – check with your lender for options and timeline

· You can also meet with a Financial Aid counselor to discuss options or apply for a deferment

· Questions? Contact Financial Aid Office at: 212.998.4444 or financial.aid@nyu.edu

□ Get Involved as an Alumnus! Steinhardt Alumni and NYU Alumni

· You will receive an email from Steinhardt and NYU inviting you to claim the benefits of the NYU Alumni Network, including events and an Alumni Card, which gives you some limited access to Bobst and other privileges.

· Stay in touch! We love to receive updates and feature our alums in Newsletters and our website. Email: steinhardt-ash-alumni@nyu.edu
