The Education Studies Student Council (ESSC) was founded in 2016 and is compromised of student representatives of the Education Studies Program. The mission of ESSC is to create a unified community across the student body. By providing educational, social, and academic opportunities, ESSC hopes to enrich the undergraduate experience of the Education Studies program and foster an exchange of knowledge and cross-cultural understanding. Furthermore, ESSC aims to build lasting relationships between faculty, alumni, and current students.
Any Education Studies student is welcome to join our events, and apply to be an official member of the council. Applications are open at the end of the spring semester, and members serve for a one year term.
If you have any questions about how to get involved, who we are, or have an idea for an event, please reach us at: nyu.essc@gmail.com or reach out on Instagram @nyu.essc!
Hello! My name is Elianne (my friends and family call me Lili), and I am a junior majoring in Education Studies. I was born in Mexico City and moved to the United States when I was eleven years old! Ever since sophomore year of high school I have been very passionate about education policy and learning more about the inequities in our education system. More specifically, I want to focus on how schools can become more culturally responsive and provide immigrant, low-income students with the proper resources to succeed in this country. Aside from my academic interests, I also just love staying active by going for a nice walk or run, doing some weightlifting, and playing tennis, soccer, or skiing. I am very happy to have ESSC running this year and I hope all of you take advantage of the great opportunities it offers!
Hey! I’m Rosa, a junior in Education Studies with a minor in Economics. Growing up in China and later studying in the U.S. as an international student since 15 years old, I responded to my educational experience with the acknowledgment that it was embedded with different kinds of education with pros and cons on each since for different academic environments, the public focused on divergent goals. I also noticed that western students had a more expansive view of privacy and individualism, whereas eastern students had a more communal notion and less expansive view of private spheres. Although I do seem now to see from both cognitive perspectives, my findings and realizations still trigger me to dig deeper about my academic interest in Education Studies. The passion to join the education community makes my passion more oriented and organized, and I know now that I have found the way to go. In the lifelong learning process, this being vice president of ESSC is also a lesson for me.
Hi there! I’m Sabrina, a sophomore studying Education Studies with a minor in Public Policy & Management. I’m from Taipei, Taiwan and love to travel, explore, and eat new foods! In terms of education, for as far back as I can remember, I’ve always loved working with kids and students in learning environments. My experiences in the education realm then propelled me to become extremely passionate about access to education, specifically access to higher education. I hope to one day help guide students in underfunded communities apply and succeed in college regardless of their statuses and achieve their goals in their future careers. I’m excited to be part of such an amazing community, hope to see you at the next ESSC event!
Hi! My name is Elena, and I am a junior in Education Studies with minors in Law and Society and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies. I am from Long Island, New York, but I love spending my summers working on a lake in Connecticut. Having worked with kids since I was 14 in combination with a Criminal Justice course I took junior year of high school, my interests in Education Studies have largely been inspired by my desire to learn about the role of schooling and disciplinary policies in acting as protective factors against and risk factors for youth’s exposure to the juvenile justice system. I am also interested in educational programming inside juvenile detention facilities and what schooling policies can assist in decreasing rates of recidivism. When not in Bobst, I enjoy exploring different coffee shops throughout the city and going to concerts and music festivals.
Hi! My name is Victoria, a sophomore in Education Studies with a minor in Public Policy and Management. I was born in Jersey, went back to Shanghai for a bit, and came back to the states for education. Growing up in a diverse and small town, there was still a clear racial disparity in the levels of classes, and our district put a lot of emphasis on ensuring that our system could provide an equitable opportunity. I noticed the interconnection between economics, race, education, and this never ending cycle, and want to focus particularly on how to solve the paradox between the pursuit of wealth and access to quality education. Outside of academics, I love fitness and sports, food adventures, spending time with friends, and cooking and baking! I’m so excited to be a part of ESSC and can’t wait to grow with everyone!
