Phonology

Research on phonology in the NTNU Linguistics Group encompasses diverse topics in two language groups, Chinese (including Beijin Mandarin, Boshan, Changsha, Changting, Chengdu, Hakka, Kunming, Pingyao, Tianjin, and Taiwanese) and Formosan languages (including Amis, Atayal, Bunun, Kavalan, Paiwan, Pazeh, Siraya, Tsou, and Truku). Faculty and students are engaged in work on syllabification, tone sandhi, tonal reduplication, segmental reduplication, and loanword adaptation. Emphasis is placed on theoretical studies of these topics to provide answers to what language is, how it works, and how universal grammar operates.
