Research on phonetics in the NTNU Linguistics encompasses diverse topics in acoustics and articulation. Research on acoustic phonetics includes tone, intonation, stress, and vowel formants. Articulatory properties of speech production (such as vocal fold vibration, oral-nasal airflow, and tongue movement) are also examined by faculty and students. The department has a well-equipped Phonetics Lab with facilities and equipment to cater for sound recording, speech analysis, and real-time feedback displays (for pitch, loudness, and formants). Full training on quantitative data analysis and programming for speech perception and production research can be provided by the lab director.
