Hsi-Yao Su is Professor of Linguistics at Department of English, National Taiwan Normal University. She received her Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin in 2005. Trained as a sociolinguist, she is particularly interested in the connection between language, identity, and language ideologies in the context of Taiwan and transnational Chinese communities. She has carried out research projects in the following areas: (1) Culturally charged terms, such as ‘qizhi’ and ‘tai’, as sites where language ideologies and gender ideologies intersect and co-construct each other; (2) Language use in contemporary Taiwan, including phonological variation, code-switching, and online language play; (3) Language and the tension between Taiwan and China, including language and identity issues concerning Taiwanese in China, simplified Chinese in the Taiwanese linguistic landscape, and ideologies concerning politeness across the Taiwan Strait; (4) Discourses concerning the legalization of same-sex marriage; and (5) Humor, (im)politeness, and language ideologies.
Hsi-Yao Su has published in internationally renowned journals such as Journal of Sociolinguistics, Journal of Pragmatics, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Gender and Language, Language and Linguistics, Journal of Asian Pacific Communication, Concentric: Studies in Linguistics, etc. She has also published papers in edited volumes by well-known publishers such as Oxford University Press and Wiley-Blackwell. She was Editor-in-Chief of Concentric: Studies in Linguistics in 2014-2016 and is on the editorial board of Journal of Asian Pacific Communication since 2015. She is the recipient of Outstanding Professor Award (2013-2014, offered by National Taiwan Normal University) and Special Outstanding Talent Award (2011, offered by National Science Council).
