Dr. Shiao-hui Chan is Professor of Linguistics in the English Department of National Taiwan Normal University. She is the director of the Neurolinguistics Laboratory and is interested in the relationship between language and the brain. Research projects in her lab adopt behavioral, ERP and fMRI techniques and center around the following topics: (1) the dependency relationship between elements within a phrase/sentence (e.g. the agreement between a classifier and its associated noun), (2) the representation and processing of hierarchical structure in the syntactic and conceptual domains, (3) language and thought (e.g. how the classifier system influences conceptual categorization), and (4) interfaces between language and non-linguistic functions (e.g. executive functions and language mixing/switching). Dr. Chan has been awarded Excellent Teaching Award and Ministry of Science and Technology (Most) Award for Excellence in Research.
