Cognitive Linguistics

Cognitive Linguistics is the study of the interaction between language and cognition. In particular, in NTNU Linguistics we examine to what extent the formal properties of language use are motivated by cognitive principles/mechanisms and experiential/cultural backgrounds. This socio-cognitive commitment sees language as embedded in the overall human cognitive capacities. Through the study of language use in daily interaction, NTNU linguistics researchers approach grammatical constructions by not analyzing their structural definitions per se but highlighting the socio-cognitive focuses underlying the language use.
