Computational linguistics refers to an interdisciplinary field devoted to the study of computer systems for processing natural languages. As an enormous amount of knowledge is now available in machine readable form as natural language texts, this field has experienced a significant growth in the last few decades, featuring the use of statistical techniques, the availability of large corpora, and the application of powerful machine learning algorithms. In connection to the development of the text analytics technology, NTNU linguistics researchers highlight the value of the efficient data retrieval and quantitative methods in natural language processing and their contribution to our understanding of the relationship between language and human cognition.
