After 36 years since the release of the original, Top Gun returns to the theaters Friday, May 27, 2022, for its highly anticipated sequel, Top Gun Maverick.
Top Gun Maverick follows Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise), after 30 years in the service, as he tries to dodge the advancement in rank that will ground him. He remains a test pilot and allows himself to keep flying a plane. However, this all changes when he is asked to train a detachment of graduates for a special assignment. Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.
Top Gun Maverick has been highly praised thus far with a 97% rating from Rotten Tomatoes and 8.5/10 from IMDb. NPR noted that the film was “Ridiculously entertaining.” Fans from the original generation of Top Gun fans are hoping for the new movie to be a piece of 80s nostalgia.
This movie has also been praised by a number of A-listers. Kate Middleton and Prince William enjoyed the premiere in London and were delighted to be welcomed by Tom Cruise, according to Vogue Magazine. The film has received a 5-minute standing ovation at the beginning and end of its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Tickets for Top Gun Maverick are now available at your favorite local movie theater. In a Collider article, Movie Director Joseph Kosinski recommends that “moviegoers should see the film in IMAX, as the cameras used to film the pilots were suited for IMAX screens.”
