Welcome to the Huguenot Herald. We are the student-run newspaper at New Rochelle High School. We meet Wednesdays in room 309.
Voters came to the polls on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, and cast their ballots for the school board election. In this particular election, two seats were open for the school board and one for the library board of Trustees. New Rochelle residents also had the chance to vote on the school district budget and the library budget.
Voters approved the school district budget, an increase from the 2021-2022 school budget by 2.79% for a total of $298,760,957. School officials have said to counter the increased budget, taxes will be raised by 0.98 percent. Voters also approved a $24.3 million 15-year capital bond proposition for damages brought by Hurricane Ida. This will allow for repairs and restoration of school buildings. It is expected that 90% of the funds will be provided through flood insurance, Federal/State Aid, and FEMA.
Candidates Adam Cooper and David Peters won the election for the two City School District of New Rochelle (CDSNR) School Board position openings. Adam Cooper has one year of experience on the school board before his first full term. He is hoping to help students recover from unfinished learning, provide emotional support, expand access to technology for students and staff, and to provide a safe and secure learning environment, according to an article from NRED.org.
David Peters is serving his first term on the school board. He is a graduate of New Rochelle High School and has three grandchildren who attend schools in the district. He previously served on the CDSNR COVID-19 Advisory Board along with the Westchester Community Opportunity Program and the United Community Center of Westchester Boards. Peters has 25 years of experience as a social worker and hopes to improve the relationship between police and students, according to an interview with NRED.org.
Rhiannon Navin was elected to a five-year term on the Library Board of Trustees, which oversees the direction of the New Rochelle Public Library and Huguenot Children's Library. During her term, she hopes to establish more after-school programs for teens and children seeking extra help, particularly for ENL/ESL learners.
