Welcome to the Huguenot Herald. We are the student-run newspaper at New Rochelle High School. We meet Wednesdays in room 309.
Crotty’s Cheesesteaks, located at 8 Eastchester Road, is a new eatery with close proximity to New Rochelle High School. They are a small family run business with the star of the menu being cheesesteaks, customized with input from the customer, along with sides like fries, salads, stuffed baked potatoes, fried pickles, mac and cheese bites, and more. Crotty’s Cheesesteaks also offers vegetarian and gluten free options so there is always something for everyone to enjoy. There are some tables inside for dining, but in-person takeout and curbside pickup are also available.
I was able to speak with co-owner, Lindsay Walsh, who told me she wanted to make the restaurant an enjoyable climate for all people. Lindsay, along with her father, Joe Crotty, opened the restaurant in the midst of the pandemic. Crotty’s Cheesesteaks came to be as a result of Joe Crotty’s Restaurant in Riverdale closing its doors due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Lindsay said, “My father always had the fighting spirit in him and would not accept sitting around the house, so he began thinking to himself, ‘What are the three favorite foods people love?” He came up with pizza, burgers, hotdogs, and of course, cheesesteaks. Lindsay, whose background is in corporate finance, looked around with her father and realized there was not a great cheesesteak place in the area. They began researching and took a trip to Philadelphia (home of the cheesesteak). As a result of their travels and research, they came up with a game plan and opened “Crotty’s Cheesesteaks,” and in so doing they have brought a little bit of Philly to New York. Their restaurant is a prime example of how hard work pays off and dreams can come true even in tough times. Lindsay stated, “In our current world, where most people are not eating in restaurants and are looking for takeout, Crotty’s came to be.”
Crotty’s opening has been met with praise and they have been featured in
Westchester Magazine and television shows such as Good Day New York and News 12. Their menu has great selections with some interesting names such as the “Irishman,” a nod to the family’s Irish heritage, and the “New Yorker,” a tribute to our state. Lindsay said that during the pandemic they always felt the support of the New Rochelle community and that support helped them continue working and achieve success with their business. You may be wondering whether Crotty’s has a deal for New Rochelle High School students, and the answer is yes. All NRHS students get 10% off their cheesesteaks, a free can of soda, and a bag of chips when they come in Monday through Friday from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm.
