In December, New Rochelle announced more details pertaining to the city’s downtown and waterfront redevelopment.
The city has already announced $2.2 billion in private investment with plans to build 3,000 apartments in the downtown New Rochelle area. There are also plans for an additional 700 apartments in the waterfront area.
Contractors are able to build higher buildings through the Community Bonus Benefits Program (CBB) by investing in green infrastructure and climate resiliency improvements. Qualifying investments will also include investment in minority and women-owned businesses.
The city of New Rochelle has also approved a plan to add a 7th city council district. This new district will likely be in the downtown or waterfront area to account for the predicted increase in population in the areas. Kathleen Gill, interim commissioner of the Department of Development, said that adding the district and building more apartments will bolster what the city has to offer and entice more people to move to New Rochelle.
This news comes as the city has announced several new projects throughout the start of this year surrounding downtown development. There is currently no clear plan available to the public as to what the waterfront area will look like.
