Creative Block Project

Project #12: The Creative Block Project

We will work through the stages of the Design Process, when creating this project at home

  1. Identify the problem: In any design process, it begins with identifying the objective and understanding what is expected in this project.
  2. Researching what has been done before
  3. Brainstorming with sketches and using resources to help you with your design(this assignment)
  4. Developing one of your ideas into a final sketch
  5. Create the design and present to the client

Marjan Sanee, the founder and head of the New Providence Public Art Committee

Instructions

Assigned on Tuesday, March 17th: (presented with links on Google Classroom)

  1. Identify the problem: This mural is a public display in our Municipal building. Each tile is a simple design that expresses you or identifies you as an individual. The mural represents the inclusion of many different personalities and differences.
  2. Researching what has been done before - The existing mural is a good way of observing what is expected.
  3. Brainstorming - begin by sketching thumbnail ideas in your sketchbook

Brainstorming

Assigned on Wednesday, March 18th: (presented with links on Google Classroom) - 10 points :

  1. Trace your actual block(distributed on our last day in school together) in your sketchbook
  2. Draw on the squares - focused on the positive/negative space
  3. Take a photo of your sketchbook page, using the Doc Scan app, and save in your photos, as well as on your google Drive.
  4. Submit your photo in Google Classroom, to be graded with a rubric

Due Thursday, March 19th (period 2), or Friday, March 20th (for periods 3 & 7)

On Thursday, while grading the thumbnails, I realized that many of you need to change your settings in DocScan so it will capture the tones and shading and colors of your drawings.

I prepared an Instructions Guideline for taking photos with DocScan.

Developing with color

Assigned on Thursday/Friday March 20th: (presented with links on Google Classroom)

  1. Develop your favorite sketch further, in color, in your sketchbook after reading feedback from your thumbnails.
  2. Take a photo of your sketchbook page, using the Doc Scan app, but this time be sure the settings are on "photo"
  3. Be sure to save this scan in your photos, as well as on your google Drive.
  4. Submit your photo in Google Classroom, to be graded with a rubric for color, values, use of space,

Due Monday, March 23rd

The final project

Created on the 3/5" x 3/375" tile, is to be completed during "classtime" on Tuesday, March 24th (D-day) and Wednesday, March 25(A-day)

It can have your choice of mediums or combination of mediums - collage, paint, carving, stenciling, splattering, etc....

Period 2 class must submit their photo of their finished mixed media tile by the end of the day on Wednesday, March 25th

Periods 3 and 7 class must submit their photo of their finished mixed media tile by end of day on Thursday, March 26th

Assessment: It will be graded for creativity on several levels, using a rubric for:

1. Content(is it an original design?),

2. Technique with medium(were you creative in choosing your medium and using it in an effective way?)

3. Principles of Design (is it using the space well? Is there a good proportion of positive and negative space? Is there balance?)

4. Design elements - (do you have good contrast between the elements - variation of textures, colors, values, types of lines, etc....)

5. Leap of the imagination - Personal expression is achieved through your personal style in presenting your design

Advice for the final block (4 criteria for grading):

You are being graded on four objectives: 1)Content (your idea), 2)Design with elements,, 3)Use of Medium (creativity with drawing/painting and/or use of your supplies or materials), 4)Deliberate technique (your attitude, as seen in your focus, deliberate cutting, strokes, purposeful expression),

1) Content:

Objective: a personal expression of yourself on a “square” tile block.

So many of you have a sports ball in the center. Thats ok if you make it your own - collage on top of it, be creative with background, etc....

Avoid saying "New Providence". NP is cliche because we are in New Providence. It isn't personal.

Avoid using copyrighted logos such as Yankees logos or company logos, which are not personal expressions.

Lettering: Please avoid writing words with letters that are so tiny. I'm discouraging use of lettering that is handwritten in a sloppy way without adding to the design. This is a “GRAPHIC” design class in which we are developing our skills at visual communication with designs, pictograms, simplified messages with images. Yet, typography can be used as a design element if its used well. You can cut out professional type from magazines or use newspaper cuttings with type on them, creating a texture of letters. But I saw many designs that were degraded by handwritten words that were badly placed and sloppily drawn and cliche or unnecessary.

Don't be cliché - cliché means that you are using an image that is overused, commonly seen, and you are not using your imagination

Any cliché image, like a sports logo, will receive a D for creativity grade in the rubric, which could be raised to a C if you have an original expression or presentation of that logo that shows some thought.

2) Design: Elements and Principles of Design

Balance -

Most common design I saw had one round or square object or logo in the center.

It is ok to be centered but please DONT surround it with uniform, boring negative space.

but be creative with the background or a way to create movement, going through the object, or behind the shape, etc ….

Color: Most common problem is students’ colors lacking contrast in value or intensity.

The strokes of color are all the same intensity between different hues, which don’t show contrast.

Movement: Please use diagonals, overlapping, curves, gradations, rhythm of lines or patterns, to create a dynamic impact.

Emphasis: Use good contrast! And Avoid emphasizing the corners. Be aware of placing emphasized shapes in the rule of thirds.

3) Mediums (Creative, resourceful choice):

Your choice of medium is also a reflection of you.

Tools for impressions: You could use a screwdriver to punch impressions into the mat board tile surface, like an embossment.

Collage: cut your shapes from colored photos from magazines and glue them onto the tile.

We are creating this at home. So you need to be resourceful. You can collage materials from home, such as fabric, tissue paper, magazines, netting, string, or any kind of material that you can cut and paste onto the tile.

Lines can be created by folds, overlapping, edges of materials….

Technique: (Attitude and skill in presentation)

Your deliberate style, whichever you choose, is a part of your personal expression. Your care and sense of purpose in each stroke of the pencil, cut with the knife, or splattering of the brush, is all a part of your creative expression.

Answers to common questions:

Q: Do I have to use DocScan for the photo of the final tile?

A: It's fine to take a photo and not use DocScan for the final. I would take a regular photo of the finished art, best way to capture all the values.

If you use DocScan, put the settings to "Photo". The advantage of DocScan is that it still straightens the image on your table so the square is straight-on .

However, If you position your camera exactly parallel to the surface with the tile, and the edges are "square" to the edges of the photo, it's just as good as DocScan set to "photo".
