Computer Graphic Design II will continue to develop Visual Communication skills, creating art on the drawing board and on the computer.
Students will take vector graphics(Adobe Illustrator) to a new level with more advanced tools, create photo montages in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator (the two most important programs used in the graphic design industry). Graphic Design 2 also includes multi-color printmaking techniques and collage mixed media projects, as well as producing posters digitally. Both classes meet the needs of the student who is interested in an art-related career, but its valuable for everyone to in interested in how to communicate visually.
Computer Graphic Design is an advanced art class that applies your art and design skills with professional computer programs, such as Adobe Photoshop
What is gained?
Workplace Readiness Skills (Valuable to everyone - in any career)
The student will know how to approach and solve a design problem, using the design process and cooperatively brainstorming with others in teams.
Students will be able to analyze art and verbalize their opinions, using terminology and technical concepts of the profession.
Students will complete the class with a portfolio that shows a wide variety of visual art skills.
A better understanding of the visual world and develop an ability to communication visually.
Recognition:
We have had student works chosen by outside clients from our town or within the school. Students are rewarded by being published or printed and can receive acknowledgment for designs that can be listed on a resume. I’ve had many students receive recognition with awards: (i.e. Fashion Show fundraiser posters, Road Safety Decal designs for New Providence police department, Hospital public relations poster, Teen Arts logo and poster design, Program covers for school performances, 10-K logo and T-shirt design, DuCret juried show winners, exhibitions in Morris Museum, Greeting Card design published for New Providence Board of Ed holiday card, and other community projects.)
Professional Computer Graphics programs
Students become proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and possibly animation software(computers are used in almost half of our class projects)
Creativity is stressed - It is NOT a technical class although basic technical skills on computer are taught.
The computer is simply another tool that the artist uses to create, just as the pen or brush or pencil.

This project is broken down into four assignments, working through the design process:
1. Identifying the Design Challenge: A Visual Communication of portrait of a New Providence Pioneer high school graduate that uses images and a representation(ie. silhouette) of a graduate.
Brainstorming: words that describe the positive things that represent the New Providence Pioneer high school graduate in your sketchbook.
2. Generate ideas: Research your words, find visuals, and sketch thumbnails of your layout in your sketchbook.
3. Visual metaphors - Find imagery that communicates the meaning of those concepts. Google Classroom assignment: Students open Google document to paste their visuals and explain their visual metaphors.
Due March 10th - Please fill out worksheet and paste images into the spaces that are visual metaphors of the ideas to convey about you have gained as a New Providence student
Due March 11th - Please submit a photo of your three thumbnails taken with DocScan on your iPad or phone, so it has good contrast and its easy to understand
It will be graded with a rubric for:
A) Communicating MANY concepts of the NP Pioneer graduate
B) The thumbnails are small - so you better design and proportion the space.
C) The thumbnails are sketched inside a rectangle, showing the proportion of the shapes and negative space on the board
The final Photomontage stage was interrupted by the Coronavirus. Our last day in school was Friday, March 13th.
The plan was that it would be done in Photoshop, using a combination of images and designing with computer graphics
This project did not progress past the brainstorming stages, submitted in Google Classroom on March 11th

This project is to be a part of a large wall mural to be hung in the Municipal Building, with each tile representing a person, student, child or citizen that expressed themselves on a wooden tile.
Objective: personal expression of design, color, texture, with any medium that reflects the person.
Procedure:
1. Brainstorming: Three thumbnail sketches in your sketchbook
2. Develop your idea in color
3. Decorate the 3.5" x 3.375" tile at your home, while in online home instruction. Be sure to hold the tile vertically so the 3.5" length is the height.

This is a Narrative collage/mixed media drawing on regular letter-size, computer copy paper that describes what you did during the quarantine.
Materials: Letter-sized copy paper and any medium you have at home - markers, pens, colored pencils, charcoal, cutting from magazines, newspaper, fabric, materials you can find at home and can be adhered to the paper.
Logistics and Timing: Four separate assignments, spanning 3rd and 4th marking periods, each submitted into its own Google Classroom assignment, each graded separately, so you develop your best ideas using the design process of brainstorming, researching, and thinking through content and design, as well as technique, before you create your final visual statement.
The KaleidaCam app turns your phone into a kaleidoscope!
Its a free app on your iPhone or your iPad, where it can be found in the Self-Service for New Providence High School students.
The objective is to have fun exploring this app, graded on your spirit of exploration with light, textures, and color!
We may do something with your images in the next assignment, collaging it with other photos in the Photoshop app on your iPad.
A Digital Poster, created on your iPad or computer, that is a community Service project to help inform and uplift the public during the quarantine.
You may use any method to create the work of art, but the end product is digital.
Analysis of your face - seeing your face as a product of shadows and highlights
Creating an original graphic design that incorporates your face
Transferring and Designing the final product onto a linoleum plate surface where it is carved in different color stages
If still at home during quarantine period, we will attempt on the iPad, using apps on that device.
Personal Theme: incorporating yourself, as a photo of yourself, or a part of yourself, in the collage.
Homework and Classwork to gather photos to use for the montage - April
Advanced Photoshop skills with layers, masks, curves
If still at home during quarantine period, we will attempt on the iPad, using apps on that device.
Storyboarding
Character development
Body language in comic characters
Animation
Creating a series of vector designs, abstract and with faces!
Experimenting with Vector tools - Advanced Adobe Illustrator skills
Using own face - creating vector shape from your own profile photo and morphing it in space
