Hi kiddos! I miss you all already. Make sure to complete your lessons for speech and keep working hard! Remember, you are smart, you are kind, and you are important!
Have your child make notecards/flashcards of 10 different words with 1 sound that they are practicing (check their current IEP's for information on what sounds they are working on). (Ex: lip, like, lake, lion, leap, left, life, least, lollipop, lemon). They can draw pictures if they would like. Practice the words by repeating the words with a family member for approximaitely 5 minutes each day.
Visit the following website for free word lists:
Read a book of your child's choice and at their level from home and ask him/her WH-Questions about the book. (Ex: Who is the main character?, What happened first? , Where did the story take place?, When did the story take place?) If your child has difficulty with social language skills, ask them questions the following types of questions (Ex: How is the character feeling?, How do you know they are feeling that way?, What is the character's problem?, How can they solve the problem using expected behaviors?
*If your child is nonverbal or has limited vocabulary skills, have them label items within the book and ask more basic questions (What is the bear doing?, Who is riding the bike? Where is the boy?)
*Please see information sheets for parents to get visuals for wh-questions
Expressive Language: Have your child retell main events throughout the story (First, next, last..) OR have your child label items in the book and talk about objec function: (a tiger runs fast, you use a ball to kick, throw, catch)
Start the week by talking about their communication skills and their emotions/feelings about their talking. Have your child express 2-3 ways that they can improve and make talking "easier" and 3 feelings they have about their talking.
