Technical Theatre

Set Construction

We work on Set Construction every Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday after school. There are no set commitments; show up and work when you can! We build sets, hang lights, run cables, record sounds, hang scenery and drops - learning and having fun the whole time. We welcome all who are willing to learn and work hard as a team.

If you would like more information on dates, you can look at the Lancer Productions calendar to get all of the dates we have for set construction.

Running Crew

Running crew are the people behind the scenes that make it all happen. From setting a table to pulling in curtains, and even turning on and off the lights, there is someone who is there to do that job. Interested in becoming a crew member? Props

Props are used all throughout shows and vary depending on the show. Some, like The Cat in The Hat need to be hand crafted, and others like The Play That Goes Wrong need certain props that are period appropriate for the show.

Props masters are also in charge of keeping props organized during the show and making sure actors have their props when they are needed.

Set Design

Costuming

Costuming includes everything from designing and constructing costumes, to looking for and thrifting costumes, to taking care of the costumes during shows and helping with quick changes. Look out for costuming opportunities during tech construction days too.

Makeup

Makeup is a great way to show off your art skills whether you are designing a character's makeup or you are applying it to the actor. Makeup can vary depending on the characters age, personality, the time period, and many other things. This is a great, low-commitment, way to be a part of the show without having to come to every rehearsal.

Lighting

Lighting essential to set the scene up for the audience to know where the story is taking place, if it is night, and give them an idea of the mood during each scene. This is a great way to be a part of the show and learn more about programing, hanging, focusing, and controlling lights for a show.

Hair

If you enjoy doing hair and/or are interested in learning how to do new hairstyles for characters in different age ranges and from different time periods  then you will be perfect for the hair and makeup team!

Sound

Both sound effects and mics are essential in shows so the audience can hear what the actors are saying and so they can understand what is going on using clues from what they hear rather than what they see.

Marketing

Marketing is a combination of everything that gets people to see our shows. This can include making social media posts, advertising in local businesses, participating in community events, and many more. What is the Tech Challenge?

Tech Challenge is a series of events that are designed to test knowledge of basic theatre technician skills. The combination of team and individual events underline the principle that theatre technicians do not work alone; rather an ensemble working together to accomplish given tasks makes the production successful. Each troupe has the opportunity to register TWO Tech Challenge teams at Iowa Thespian Festival with up to 7 members. Each event will be scored, and the winning Tech Challenge team will receive a special prize.
