Week 8 (WB 22nd June)

Please try to complete at least two of the tasks below to a high standard and email them to your teachers using the year group emails: y5@njsch.uk or y6@njsch.uk.

Week 8

Task 1 - Mathematics: Problem Solving Challenges

This week, we want to test your resilience by challenging you to complete two problem solving activities, which are described below. Once you have found the solutions, please share these with your class teachers.

Challenge 1

Each symbol has a numerical value. The total for the symbols is written at the end of each row and column.

Can you find the missing total that should go where the question mark has been put?

Challenge 2

There are seventy eight prisoners in a square cell block of twelve cells.

There is one prisoner in one of the cells, two in another cell, three in another, four in another and so on up to twelve prisoners in one of the cells.

The clever prison warder made it easy to check if the prisoners were all there by arranging them so there were twenty five along each wall of the prison block. How did he do it?

(There's more than one solution - send yours in - it might be different to everyone else's!)

Task 2 - Science: The Circulatory System

For your science task this week, we would like you to find out all about the human body's circulatory system. This is the part of your body that carries blood (which is pumped by the heart) to where it's needed. However, how exactly does it work?

Use the links below to find out all about the circulatory system and choose how to present your learning. You could create a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation or draw a labelled diagram of the system with a step by step explanation of how it works. Or, if you are feeling really creative, you could create a video including yourself explaining how the circulatory system works or even create a circulatory system obstacle course in your garden showing yourself as a blood cell travelling through it!

Task 3 - Art: Can you create a sculpture?

For this task, we would like to see your creativity, your imagination and your artistic flair. Can you create a 3D piece of art using materials you have around the house, in the garden, from the woods etc?

The object of your 3D artwork can be whatever you want. You may try to focus on realism and create a realistic sculpture of an animal, a person, a vehicle etc.

Or you may want to produce a modern contemporary sculpture which focuses on shapes, form, structure etc.

The materials used for your sculpture can be whatever you choose: recycled materials from home, foil, Papier-mâché or any objects found in nature etc.

Included are some pictures for inspiration or you can research sculptures or homemade sculptures.

Task 4 - History: The Ancient Egyptians

For this week's history task, we would like you to produce a detailed case study (research) about the Ancient Egyptian civilization. Your research project should answer the following five questions:

Who were the Ancient Egyptians?

When did their civilization begin and end?

What were their main achievements?

Why was the Nile river so important to the Ancient Egyptians?

How do we know so much about this ancient civilization?

You may choose to complete this task by hand or by using Google Docs or Slides. You can also include pictures or illustrations within your case study.

Task 5 - Explore another country

We would like you to create a travel brochure for a country of your choice. Try to make your country as enticing to the reader as possible by using good word choices and pictures to stimulate their imagination.

Your brochure must include:

  • the country's flag

  • key facts about the country, such as it's capital city, the currency of money used there and it's climate

  • Nice places to visit: famous landmarks and tourist attractions

  • Sub headings

  • Contact information

  • Quotes (make them up if you need to) - a quote could be from a person who's visited the country or one of its attractions.
