Week 3 (WB 11th May)

Please complete at least two of the tasks below to a good standard and email them to your teachers using the year group emails: y5@njsch.uk or y6@njsch.uk

This is Miss Oliver's comic strip about a typical day at NJS.

Task 1 - Create a comic strip of a typical day at NJS.

We would like you to design your own comic strip to show our future Year 3 pupils what a typical day at NJS looks like. You will need to think carefully about how our school day is structured, the order of our lessons and how you are going to capture this in an eye-catching, creative and hopefully entertaining way.

We are looking for some high quality pieces to be included in our booklet, so we recommend that you complete a detailed plan before you start your final product and that you re-draft your work where necessary. We also encourage you to use colour, if possible, to make your illustrations stand out.

Task 2 - Produce an aerial drawing of NJS.

Have you ever wondered what our school looks like from above? Well, this is your chance to find out.

We would like you to produce an aerial floor plan of our school that will help our future pupils to navigate their way around the building with ease.

To complete this task successfully, you will need to use the aerial photograph to draw the outline of the school building. Then, you will need to apply your own knowledge of NJS to map out, and label, each room within the building (use the example floor plan to help you). Our new pupils may also find it useful for some of the outside spaces to be included within these drawings, such as the playground for example.

Please remember that this is a technical drawing, so we expect you to use a ruler and a sharp pencil.

Task 3 - Create a collage or a piece of abstract artwork of George the tortoise.

Although George the tortoise is no longer with us, he has become something of a school mascot here at NJS! As such, we thought it was only fitting that we celebrate George in our NJS booklet to allow his memory to live on through future pupils.

With this in mind, we would like you to create a piece of high quality artwork depicting George the tortoise. You may choose to use collage for this task, which will allow you to create texture in your work through building up different layers of materials. If you do decide to use collage, you will first need to complete an accurate line drawing of George, which may require you to complete multiple drafts (remember Austin's butterfly).

Alternatively, you may prefer to create an abstract drawing. Abstract artwork is less about the detail of the subject (George) and is more about the shapes, lines, colours and feelings that the piece expresses (see examples on the left). For instance, you may choose to focus on using different shapes to create George's form (see example 1) or choose to use colour and line to create a focal point (a point that the viewer's eye is drawn to) (see example 2). Again, you may need to redraft your work multiple times in order to achieve the best possible outcome.

Task 4 - Write a newspaper report about a school trip or extra curricular activity.

We all know that our school provides its pupils with plenty of opportunities to take part in school trips and a range of different extra curricular activities, such as sporting events, Young Voices, school productions and residential trips, to name a few. As such, we believe that this is an important and enjoyable aspect of NJS life that should be shared with our future Year 3 pupils.

For this reason, we would like you to produce an exciting newspaper report to describe an event, trip or club, which you have attended whilst at NJS. Remember that these recounts need to be as engaging as possible, so you may choose to exaggerate the facts a little (don't worry, we won't tell)!

To be successful in this task, you will also need to include the main features of a newspaper report that are listed below.

Success criteria:

  • A headline followed by an introductory paragraph (5 W's - what, where, when, who and why?);

  • Subtitles and pictures with captions;

  • Written in chronological order;

  • Written in third person and in past tense;

  • Direct speech (quotations of what was said).

Year 6 Pupil Interview WAGOLL.docx

Task 5 - Write up the transcript for your own mock interview.

For this task, you will need to cast your mind back to that time when you were anxiously preparing yourself to make the transition between the infant school and Norton Juniors. We all know that this can be a very distressing time for new pupils and so the focus of this task is to help the Year 3 children to feel more settled when they move into our school.

To achieve this, we would like you to write at least five questions that you think our new pupils will want to know about NJS. You will need to think carefully about how you felt at this time and the questions that you would have wanted to ask about your new school setting. Try and write open-ended questions (questions that cannot be answered by just a 'yes' or 'no' response), so that you can give as much detail as possible.

Once you have written down your questions, write a response to each one, using your knowledge of NJS and the teachers. You may find it useful to use Google Docs to complete this task, so you can then share your document directly with your teacher.

We will then present a selection of your transcripts in our NJS booklet, so make sure that these are beautifully presented and punctuated accurately.
