Week 7 (WB 15th June)

Please try to complete at least two of the tasks below to a high standard and email them to your teachers using the year group emails: y5@njsch.uk or y6@njsch.uk.

Week 7

The work we have received so far for our expedition has been brilliant and we will be reviewing this and looking to start finalising the product. This week, we want you to start to look at some other learning within the curriculum and we have included some fantastic maths, English, Geography and Science which we unfortunately did not have chance to cover in school. We cant wait to see what awesome outcomes you produce.

Task 1 - Mathematics Problem Solving Challenges

This week, we want to test your resilience by challenging you to complete two problem solving activities, which are described below. Once you have found the solutions, please share these with your class teachers.

Problem Solving Challenge 1.pdf

Challenge 1 - What do you need?

There are two parts to this challenge.

Firstly, you have to use the eight clues to work out which number is being described.

Once you have completed this, you then need to organise the clues into four that were useful in solving the problem and four that were not. Make sure that you carefully explain your reasoning. Good luck!

Challenge 2 - A square of numbers

For this challenge, all you have to do is put the numbers 1-8 into the circles to make the calculations correct.

Easy right? Don't be so sure.

Remember that your teacher will want to see how you solved this problem, so keep a record of the strategies that you try. Good luck!

Task 2 - Grammar & Punctuation

Its time to practice your grammar skills and see what you remember! Please complete one of the SPaG tests (or both if you would like to challenge yourself!).

Unfortunately, due to the way the tests have been scanned, the questions are not necessarily in the correct order.

Don't worry if you are unable to print the tests; you can simply complete the questions on paper if this is easier for you.

Task 3 - Geography: Volcanic Eruptions

For this task, we would like you to complete a case study (detailed research) about one of the volcanic eruptions listed below. This research project will be split into three main sections.

Firstly, we would like you to write a detailed explanation of what causes volcanic eruptions. You can include diagrams to help explain your answer.

Secondly, we would like you to draw a diagram of the volcano that you have chosen to study, including labels for the main features.

Finally, we would like you to research the impact of your chosen eruption on the local environment and human population. It would be interesting to research both the short term and long term effects of the eruption.

For this task, you can choose to focus your case study on any of the following eruptions:

  • Mount Vesuvius in Italy;

  • Mount St. Helens in the USA;

  • Mount Krakatoa in Indonesia.

We have included some useful links below to get you started:

Task 4 - Science: How do we see?

For this task, we would like you to complete a study (detailed research) about light and how we see.

Firstly, we would like you to research how we see and write up a detailed explanation.

You can include but are not limited to,

  • the role light plays

  • how light travels

  • where light comes from

  • why can't we see in the dark

Secondly, we would like you to draw a diagram of the eye, including labels for the main features.

Included below are the national curriculum objectives which you will be able to cover and may help guide what we would like to see in your explanation:

  • Recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines.

  • Use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye.

  • Explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes.

  • Use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.

Task 5 - The Great NJS British Bake Off

Hello bakers! Put your baking skills to the test in this task as you will be required to bake a dish of your choice. After baking your creation and allowing time for it to cool , give your parent/carer the scoring card. Using this card, they will objectively judge your dish based on its: presentation, taste and consistency; you will also be judged on your independence.

All of these aspects will be judged on a scale of 1 -5 (where 1 = Poor, 2= Satisfactory, 3 = Good, 4 = Great and 5 = Outstanding). These scores will then be added up to produce a score out of 20. Please send in a picture of both your creation and your scoring card to y5@njsch.uk or y6@njsch.uk.

Writing an instruction text

In the second part of this task, you will need need to write a instruction text about how you made your dish, including any special ingredients or secret methods you used. In addition to utilising interesting word choices, use the success criteria below along with the model text to plan and write your own instruction text:

  • A title

  • An persuasive introduction to entice (tempt/ peak the interest of) your readers

  • Subheadings: introduction, equipment, ingredients, instructions

  • Steps in chronological order

  • Present tense

  • Prepositions: 'in', 'on', 'under', 'around'

  • 'Bossy' verbs (imperative verbs) such as 'put', 'take', 'mix', 'spread'

  • Adverbials of time: instruction texts also often use time connectives at the start of each numbered point ('First', 'Next', 'Then' and 'Lastly').
