Week 4 (WB 18th May)

Please complete at least two of the tasks below to a high standard and email them to your teachers using the year group emails: y5@njsch.uk or y6@njsch.uk.

Task 1 - What is Crew?

This week we will be looking deeper in to crew and expeditions and completing work to help demonstrate what they are.

So what is crew? A question that many year pupils from different schools and also many parents may ask. For this task we would like you to present a fantastic, informative piece of work which answers this question the best you can.

Produce an information text/leaflet all about crew.

What is the purpose of crew? How often do crew sessions happen? What happens within a crew session? (appreciations, stands and apologies) What happens as a result of crew sessions? Have crew sessions helped you within school? (handle situations, socialising or academically while working with your study partner). etc.

These are just some example questions you might want to cover in your piece.

Remember to make your information text interesting with high quality word choices as well as the features listed below.

  • Heading

  • Introduction/opening paragraph

  • Sub-Headings

  • Bullet points

  • Paragraphs

This is about a very different subject but look at the layout, the content and the language used to help you write yours.

Task 2 - Design a logo for your crew.

What better way to make crew personal to you than to design and create your own class crew logo using the word CREW.

With this task we really want to see your personality come through and for you to show off your creativity and artistic flair. Think carefully about the design that you select and be creative with colour, the shape and the style of font.

Look at the images provided to inspire you and watch the video for a step by step guide to creating graffiti style tags.

We are looking for some high quality pieces to be included in our booklet, so remember, the key to a beautiful piece of work is the process. Plan it, draft it, critique it then produce your final piece.

We also encourage you to use colour, if possible, to make your crew logo stand out.

Task 3 - Create a Crew poem.

The year 5 & 6 team have been mightily impressed with the standard of poetry produced this year so why not put 'Crew' into a poem?

Your task is to write a poem all about crew. What is crew? What does crew mean to you?

Mrs Smith's poem 'What does crew mean to me?' has been included for you to read and be inspired by.

Firstly, read Mrs Smith's poem 'What does crew mean to me?'. reflect on the content, the language, the structure and the rhyming pattern.

Using this as inspiration, write your very own crew poem. You can do this by rewriting Mrs Smith's poem making sure that your poem follows the same same structure and rhyming pattern but changing the words to fit your idea of crew.

Or you might want to do something completely different and use everything we have learnt about poetry over the year to help you write a completely original poem

We will then select some of your inspired poems and these will be included in our booklet, 'What makes NJS great?'.

Two possible ideas for how you might structure your work.

Or you may choose a mood board style with separate section boxes.

Task 4 - How do expeditions help you learn?

We have enjoyed some fantastic expeditions in year 5 and 6 this year and learnt so much (year 5 - Blue Planet and Explorers. Year 6 - Blue Planet and Witchcraft and Wizardry).

Can you display what you have learned during your favourite past expedition in a mind map?

Think about

  • Why was this expedition so enjoyable?

  • What did you hope to learn about?

  • What surprised you during your learning on this expedition?

  • What was your favourite part of the expedition?

  • What did you learn during this expedition?

  • Has the expedition changed the way you think today?

You can use some or all of these questions within your mind map or you can use some of your own.

Remember, we want this to be informative but also visually interesting for the year 2 pupils so please include pictures and colour where possible.

Task 5 - Create an expedition poster.

Plan and design an expedition poster for an expedition you have covered during your time at NJS (year 5 - Blue Planet and Explorers. Year 6 - Blue Planet and Witchcraft and Wizardry). Pick your favourite expedition and think about the events, learning and possibly a trip that made it appealing. Thinking about the future year groups who are yet to be in year 5 or 6, design an informative poster that will excite the reader and make them want to explore that expedition.

In addition to using interesting word choices to excite the reader, make sure you include the features of a poster:

  • Snappy slogans

  • Exaggeration

  • Intriguing questions

  • Word play

  • Rhetorical questions

  • Benefits of the outcome/product

You may use a computer to design your poster or you can present your poster on a paper format.

We can’t wait to see what you produce!
