Research Inclusion Strategy 2022-2027
NIHR’s first Research Inclusion strategy outlines our priorities for the next 5 years.
The strategy represents a significant step in embedding inclusion across NIHR's research, systems and culture and we want all NIHR staff to feel empowered to help create a more inclusive organisation.
To truly embed inclusion in everything we do, everyone within our NIHR workforce will need to play their part - through everyday actions, the decisions we make and plans we put in place.
Diversity Data
NIHR’s Diversity Data was first published in 2021. We will continue to develop our reporting approach as it is a key part of our commitment to advancing inclusion. This will allow us to identify and address biases in our systems, culture and processes.
Collecting data will give us a more robust evidence base and empower us to take more effective action which will form the basis for the continual development of our Research Inclusion strategy.
To ensure that we are identifying underrepresentation across all the protected characteristics, we have developed an NIHR standard diversity data question and response set which is now available on NIHR Learn.
Equality Impact Assessment training and resources
Equality Impact Assessments (EIA) are a way of considering the effect, or impact, of activities, on different groups of individuals.
An activity may, on the surface, seem fair because it is applied to everyone equally, but may adversely impact a particular group of people.
EIAs are not only used to address discrimination and mitigate negative impacts, they’re also a tool to proactively promote equity, improve access and inclusion.
There is a module on EIAs on NIHR Learn that contains key templates and guidance on how to use an EIA. The Research Inclusion Team also provide training and drops in. Spaces can be booked via NIHR Learn.
Good Practice Guide: Inclusive Language and Communications
To engage effectively with our stakeholders, including academics, NHS staff and members of the public, we need to make sure communications about our research, initiatives and successes are inclusive.
This guide aims to help all staff at NIHR consider practical steps to create and foster inclusive communications.
