FIRST – For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. As stated in its name, the mission of this organization is to inspire young people's interest in STEM and prepare them for their future through various programs hosted by FIRST. Robotic competitions are not the entirety of this organization or its related programs, but rather a path or method to achieve its core values: of sportsman ship, respect for the contributions of others, teamwork, learning and community involvement and are part of out commitment to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Narrow down! Figure out what goal you want to accomplish and then...research research research! See what organizations accomplish the goals that you want to too. For example you want to spread and showcase STEM to a younger audience...what about the Buffalo Science Museum. If you want to help refugees resettling into Buffalo we found the Home Again Project. Keep in mind it all starts with ideas the more ideas you can come up with the more niches ways you can help the community.
Now that you know what organization you want to reach out to now is the time to establish connections! When you are emailing make sure you have a formal, academic, and friendly tone. Remember you are asking them if you can work with them so be polite. Here is an example:
Now that you have established a connection make sure to keep in touch! Communicate on your end if there is anything that comes up such as volenteer numbers changing. Make sure to ask meaningful questions like venue size and how many people to expect. Make sure you take lots of pictures to upload to the share google drive for documentation! Pictures should be of the people you are reaching and also what you are doing at the event. You want everyone to get tons of photos of what you guys did! Here are some example of good photos:
