In this section, we will describe what EXPO projects are and why we do them.
Over the last eight years, students have built and maintained, Side Projects called Expo Projects. Many of these started as personal passion projects, where students explored new topics, skills, or mechanical ideas they were excited about. The expo projects cover many topics. Including technologies such as augmented reality, big data analysis, artificial intelligence, app development, and computer vision. They are often also lego projects as well.
Each year, every senior on the team completes a capstone project of their choosing. These projects allow students to explore personal interests and contribute something lasting to the team. Whether it’s a new mechanism, a piece of software, or documentation and resources, each senior leaves behind a project or valuable knowledge for future team members. These senior capstone projects can be passed on and refined over the years and used when we show off our expo projects. In most recent years the Bubble bot was created.
During the summer, we focus on building new skills and trying out new ideas through open lab days. Summer projects give team members a chance to work on areas they want to improve or explore skills they might use in the upcoming season. These projects are often more experimental and serve as important practice and preparation for competition season. Notably the Live action Mario Karts were made over the summer and now are very popular especially among younger kids!
Expo projects are stored in clearly labeled bins along the left wall of our STEM lab, organized by project type. Larger projects, such as the Mario Kart side project, are stored in the back area.
