A QR code is a two dimensional barcode which is a machine-readable optical label that contains information about the item that is attached to. QR codes can be used in a variety of ways. They can be scanned by a phone which will quickly send the phone to a website without having to manually type the URL. They are also used in advertising. There is a variety of uses of these codes to make life easier for just about anyone.
Quick Response. By design, QR codes are supposed to quickly present the information it is attached with by scanning them.
They differ from UPC barcodes (The ones you typically see on a box and scan when buying something) because they use small squares instead of lines. QR codes are considered 2D codes which means they can store more than your typical 1D code (such as UPC Codes).
They are very reliable. Once a code is generated, it will not lose the data that it contains. Only if the data on it itself becomes corrupt is when any data may be lost. They can also still be read after being damaged.
Yes, they care completely free. Anyone can create or use one without having to pay any money or get any permission.
It is possible but its not very practical. QR codes can store more than your average UPC code, they do not store that much data. Images and sound consume more data than text and data is limited on a QR code.

P.E. Standard: Benchmark 1-H-1: Demonstrates proficiency in applying advanced skills, strategies and rules for specific activities.
The teacher places some QR codes around the area which the activity is taking place. The teacher then gives the first QR code to the class and they scan it using a mobile device. This code will give them hints to where the next code is at. The students then go on to search for the next code which will then give them a hint to where the following code is. The purpose is to find all the codes (or "caches") in order to complete the activity. At each code, it included with the hints a fitness activity to do before proceeding to find the next code to increase activity levels. This activity would requires students to apply problem solving strategies and rules given to them to complete the tasks.
P.E. Standard: Benchmark 5-H-1: Demonstrates safe and appropriate use and care of equipment and facilities.
Teacher adds a code to or near each piece of equipment being used that day. When scanned, the code will tell the students what to do, how long to do it, and the safety precautions to take while using the equipment to meet training objectives. Helps the teacher be in multiple places at once in a way. An example would be as if a code was placed next to a bench press telling the students to do a set of ten reps and to always have someone spotting them while they workout.
