What are Heart Words?!?

Heart Words is a method for teaching High Frequency Words, which many of us have referred to as Sight Words or Trick Words.  High Frequency words are the most commonly used words in printed text. In the past, students have been taught that they need to memorize these high frequency words (and know them “by sight”) in an effort to get them reading sooner. 

When students learn the Heart Word method, they use their phoneme knowledge to map the regular part of the words, then only have to “learn by heart” the sounds that are irregular in the word, thus the name Heart Words.
