Holly Jones

This is my 14th year teaching in Nelson County. I taught English at Nelson Middle School for 11 years, and moved to Rockfish to work as a Reading Specialist in 2019.

My education includes a minor in Elementary Education (K-6) from Roanoke College, and a Masters of Education in Reading (K-12) from University of Lynchburg.

In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, exploring the outdoors, and reading. As a child, my favorite children's book was Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus by Barbara Park. I stumbled across this series while visiting a book shop as a child. After reading the first book, I was hooked. I was always looking for the release date of the next book in the series. Over the years, I have shared this book with children I babysat as well as my niece.

When I graduated from Roanoke, I knew that I wanted to return to the Central Virginia region. I had always heard great things about Nelson County Publics Schools and I knew Nelson was a tight-knit community. During my time as a 6th grade teacher, I saw the value in small group instruction. I also saw the importance of reaching struggling readers at an early age and decided to pursue a Masters in Reading. In 2019, a Reading Specialist position became available and I moved to a new role in the division. Teaching reading is such a rewarding experience. I love helping students understand how words work and helping students find books that they truly love.
