Hayley Osborne

Tye River ESOL Students this fall at Wintergreen Resort

Hi! I am Hayley Osborne. This is my 9th year of teaching in Nelson County Public Schools. As a native to this area, I have always loved and admired the strong sense of community that is shared here. I believe in the power of place and the importance of preserving the bucolic nature of our county.

In the fall of 2019,  I had the opportunity to be a part of a global education program which changed my perspective on teaching. Throughout the 10 week course we learned about global competencies. These skills, values and behaviors can revolutionize all instruction. The four main components being; investigating the world, recognizing perspectives, communicating ideas and taking action. These four competencies have become the new lens for my teaching. I have found that building instruction in this way can build a stronger sense of community within our classrooms, it can authentically help promote empathy and above all else demonstrate that within our world there is an irrefutable interconnectedness that we can leverage as a bridge for peace and understanding.

When the opportunity came to join the ESOL department of Nelson County, I was excited to be able to use this knowledge to help the team build an equitable environment for all of our students. Nelson County’s ESOL department works to provide our diverse population of non-native speakers of English a variety of ESOL courses, activities and events, which can help them eliminate the linguistic barriers in achieving their academic, economic, and personal goals

My new role as ESOL teacher has allowed me the opportunity to work with all of our ESOL students K-12, some of whom have recently moved here from their home country and others whose families have been here for generations. Working within the scope of all four of Nelson County's schools allows me to zoom out and build cohesiveness for our English Learners throughout their educational journey.

My goals as an educator are to promote a strong sense of learning within our community,  to empower English Learners in the classroom, to advocate for equitable instruction and to provide a supportive atmosphere for students to be themselves and to reach their potential.
