Nelson County Public Schools teaches reading and spelling using an Orton-Gillingham approach. Our first and second grade classroom teachers use the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE). Our intervention teachers use S.P.I.R.E. Both of these methods are explicit, systematic, and multi-sensory.

What is orthographic mapping?
Orthographic mapping is the process that readers utilize to become proficient at reading. During this process, students use the oral language processing part of their brain to connect the sounds of words they already know to the letters in a word. Next, they store the connected sounds and letters of that word (along with their meaning) as an instantly recognizable word. This is described as “sight vocabulary” or “sight words” because that word is now recognized so quickly or just by sight.
