Early October through Early November:
Unit: Jump Bands
OverView:
Jump bands/ Tinikiling is a popular activity which originated in the Philippine islands. Traditionally, bamboo poles on top of wooden blocks are used to perform this activity. However, in class we use elastic bands called jump bands to practice this rhythmic art form. The people who are connected to the jump bands keep a rhythmic pattern of out, out, in, in with their feet as they open and close the jump bands. When the bands are open, the dancer is in between the bands, when the bands are closed (in, in) the dancer is keeping a rhythmic pattern outside of the bands. This is a great cardiovascular workout for both the middle jumpers and the people connected to the jump bands.
Objectives:
1. TSW demonstrate agility by jumping in and out of the jump bands working on specific patterns with 80% accuracy.
2. TSW demonstrate teamwork by effectively working within a group to accomplish the same task/goals.
3. TSW describe the importance of beat and rhythm when performing jump bands and why the group must follow the same beat.
4. TSW describe the importance of cardiovascular activities like jump bands and how these activities can improve their fitness and health throughout life.
5. TSW demonstrate cooperation by taking turns and sharing the jump bands with each other.
6. TSW describe what a quarter note is and be able to clap the beat of a quarter-note with their hands and keep a similar jumping pattern.
7. TSW demonstrate leadership by creating their own jump band routines and present it to the class.
8. TSW understand how to safely use the jump bands i.e. not ever stretching them, or slinging them back at people, while engaged in the activities.
9. TSW Work at their own level while being aware of the refinements and extensions that each activity offers.
10. TSW understand where tinikling originated (Philippine Islands) and be able to geographically find the landmark on a map
