Overview:
The students in grades K-2 will be engaged in a variety of activities that have to do with flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, aerobic capacity, and they will talk about body composition. Each student will be able to participate and describe activities for each area of fitness as well as state the importance of each area. These grades will participate in various games and enjoy a circuit fitness challenge in their classes. The 3rd and 4th graders will participate in aerobic dance and fitness. The student will challenge their rhythmical awareness and coordination as they learn footwork patterns and dance patterns related to step aerobics. They will also perform body weight exercises to improve their strength and endurance of their muscles.
1. Explain the physiological changes of the heart during exercise.
2. Explain the importance of being aerobically fit and the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.
3. Demonstrate aerobic fitness by participating in aerobic dance or other cardiovascular related activities.
4. Demonstrate the ability to stay on rhythm and beat when performing aerobic dance routines and following the beat of the music.
5. Identify the differences within the components of fitness (muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, aerobic endurance, and body composition) and be able to list activities that work these different areas of fitness.
6. The students will be able to identify healthy vs. unhealthy food choices and how these choices have a direct effect on their bodies and performance.
7. The students will be able to find their pulse at the carotid artery and radial artery and explain why their heart beats faster during exercise and what it transports to working muscles.
8. Third and 4th graders will be able to explain why people have different nutritional needs based on the amount of activity a person performs.
