"They had always been so pretty and perfect, and I didn’t belong here. They didn’t realize that monsters might be a lot closer than they think."

Set in a 19th century era with a twist of magic, there exists a world called Lucinda. Though everyone has the ability to master different forms of magic, not everyone seeks higher study at universities like Runovia to become licensed Spellbreakers. Beldonia Kaelus is one of the brave students who has taken up such a challenge; however, she harbors a dark secret that has never truly gone away. The otherworldly mistake that Beldonia made as a desperate teen has come back with a wrath that could change the world as she knows it forever. As Beldonia tries to balance her facade as top student, she must also maintain the safety of those she loves before they all become prey to the monster that is growing within the shadows.
Everyone in the world of Lucinda learns the fundamentals of magic. However, to use magic for offensive, defensive, and healing purposes, one must go through higher forms of schooling to be a licensed Spellbreaker. One such school is Runovia University, one of the most prestigious in the country of Divina, located in the capital city of Dawnhart.
Runovia students will study different areas of magic called "Focuses." It is possible to study more than one, albeit difficult because studies for one Focus alone are intensive. There are also Minor Focuses. Utilizing them with one's magic will make it very powerful and can open pathways to new spells and abilities. Although not required, the culture in Runovia cultivates the expectation that all students are to take on a Minor Focus.

To make your way in this World of Magic.
excerpt
If you had the chance to fix the shattered, the broken, the beaten, would you do it? If you had been locked away in a room full of suffocating, pitch-black darkness, and after years of suffering from the hand of other evils, you finally saw just a flickering gleam of hope, would you race to it? Would you run, and run, and swallow gulps of the first bits of fresh air in a century as you chased the ghosts of light, just for the mere chance to be whole once more? Would you do it even if it dropped the trapdoor on the gallows, inevitably choking the life of an innocent soul?
Would you do it even if your other half was at risk?
It happened in the dark. Discovery of the forbidden, one might say, something so foul that it was a forgotten name, only to be uncovered by a desperate soul yearning for affection. Desperation was the perfect target.
An act of discovery led this desperate soul to think. The thinking led to hope. Hope led to action, action led to thievery, thievery led to planning, and planning led to ritual. In the end, a wish was granted, but it left behind a mere crack of an open portal in its wake, allowing darkness and evil to slip through into the corporeal realm. She only wanted to be enough. Now she never will.
But that was seven years ago.
Today, there lay in the wood a fallen stag. Its life had come to an end. It was a long one, a noble one, spent surveying the forest and all its beauty. It had escaped the clutches of hunters, bears, sickness, and infection, and one day, it simply lay down and died. A peaceful slip into eternal sleep. By now, natural processes had already laid waste to its corpse, with maggots chewing away at its flesh and their eggs nestling in the crevices of its innards and bones. A vulture or two had come along to partake in the stag for a quick meal before taking flight to the next resting place. Such is the way of life. You are born. You live. You die, and you return to the earth to become one with nature again.
But with all its rot and decay, this stag still had use to it.
A black ooze began to push through the porous dirt beneath the corpse. It moved as one as inky globs, swirling and encircling the corpse that was now more bone than flesh, defying gravity as it floated with a mind of its own. It entered the nooks and crannies of decomposing sinew, and despite there being so little left, it took what it could. It consumed, just as it always did.
The stag began to twitch. First, a tail, then a hoof, and then, its remaining skin and flesh began to crawl and rumble as though snakes slithered below the surface. The deer lifted a limp and furry neck, its head dangling as putrid, black blood dripped down from its gaping neck. Strangled moans and whines forced through rotting vocal cords, each one a pitiful cry from the afterlife. The deer began to quiver as its sun-bleached bones began to grow, some piercing the remaining skin and making its fur a tapestry across its body. The antlers elongated, the hooves enlarged and splintered like wood, its teeth sharpened and its clouded eyes melted down its tear ducts. Black ooze seeped from its every crevice and its ears flicked as its limp head turned this way and that. The creature stood up on long, shaky, bony legs and stumbled like a newborn fawn taking its first steps, but it was anything but a rebirth. The creature, on shaky legs and a deformed spine, broke the silence of the desolate woods by letting out a blood-curdling bray that bounced off the bark of trees that could tell no secrets. They could only wait in silence, and witness without a word.
Deep within the wood, something grew. Deep within the wood, darkness formed.

Beldonia Kaelus is a bright student at Runovia. She is 22 years old and the younger twin of her brother, Alistair. Beldonia's Major Focus is the Sun, while her Minor Focus is Enchantment. Beldonia is a bubbly, kind, and talkative young woman who keeps close to her brother, her roommate Penelope, and other friends. She is known for her social attitude and her intense desire to win her father's approval, but what her friends don't know is what moral lines she's crossed to do so. Beldonia's sweet demeanor hides the secrets she holds, but behind her mistakes is a young girl who's only ever wanted to be enough.

Kade Lioncourt is an elusive and rather puzzling student at Runovia. Aged 23, Kade chooses to keep to himself and focuses much more on his studies than he does anything else. Though his Major Focus is the Shadows, he seems to be much more invested in his Minor Focus of Necromancy and is an apprentice to the only Necromancer Master at Runovia, Professor Callaghan. His closed-off demeanor has made it difficult for Beldonia to get a read on him and created tension between them both despite only encountering each other twice.

There have been many things that I have learned throughout writing this project. I have been a writer ever since I was younger and have gained experience in this by creating my own characters and universes; however, most of this was cultivated through text-based roleplay. Text-based roleplay is essentially writing a story but with another person in real-time. Some stories that I have written have taken years to cultivate and are still ongoing. Although I've written thousands upon thousands of words through this medium, translating my skills from writing with other people to writing alone has been a challenging but fruitful experience.
I have had to think more about how to write characters that aren't from the perspective of Beldonia. In roleplay, it is very common to be very transparent about character intentions, goals, and secrets, which is considered basic etiquette amongst writers. Things are always discussed so as to not make the other person uncomfortable or unheard in the direction of the story. However, with long forms of fiction, it is all up to me on how I tell the story. I get to work with strategically keeping things from the reader, but also giving enough information to build the story. Though I was shaky at first when I was learning how to formulate the story without giving too much or too little, I eventually figured out how to get it just right.
On top of this, I typically write in the third person, but for the project, I wrote in the first person. This at first felt uncomfortable, but after writing just a page or two, I slipped very easily into the groove of first-person and have enjoyed playing into writing an unreliable narrator.
I've taken much inspiration from some of my favorite TV shows like Vox Machina and The Dragon Prince. The idea of a fantastical journey with colorful characters, relations, and dynamics has driven me forward when writing my own story. "The Grace Year" by Kim Ligget has aided me with writing in the first person.
My name is Sofia Nieves and I am an English major graduating from CSUCI this semester. I plan to get my credentials after graduating and teach English abroad in Japan before returning to teach English in the States. I am an avid writer and thoroughly enjoy spending hours creating new worlds and characters of my own. My dream has always been to write a book and I hope that Shadows of the Sun will someday fulfill that.
Whenever I'm not writing, I watch Transformers, draw, spend time with my dogs, or play video games with friends. If you want to read more of my writing, and also keep up with Shadows of the Sun, you can check out the link below. Cheers!
