Accepting Myself

My name is Andrea Villagomez. I am an English major who will be graduating next Fall. I hope to get into CSUCI's teaching credential program so that I can be a single subject teacher. I am also interested in creative writing and have dabbled in that throughout my English education. Outside of my school education, my hobbies are playing video games, listening to music and podcasts, reading fiction novels, and my favorite thing to do is spend time with my wife and our four pets.
My project is a zine using queer theory as a lens for me to reflect about my sexuality, classic poets who are queer, and I include poetry I wrote inspired by my wife. I include a brief analysis of a poem by Walt Whitman showing queer theory in practice and continue my reflection about classic poets.
At the beginning of this project I had a very different vision that I found wasn't going to work. I pivoted my plan and still found a way to incorporate queer theory. I learned that creating a zine is about ignoring regular conventions and doing what I want and how I want to! This is something that I struggled with in the beginning as I initially tried to order everything nicely and in a way that made sense. This project showed me what it is to be a creative writer because it's a lot like what a zine is. Forgetting the normal conventions of English grammar and playing around with structures and formats.
