Program of Studies - World Languages

Students are not required to complete World Language courses in order to earn a high school diploma. However, for those planning to attend a 2-year of 4-year college program upon graduation it is highly recommended that students complete a minimum of two years in a language. A minimum of three years of a single language or two years in each of two different languages is required to earn an Honors Diploma. Below is a printable list of courses available at WCHS.

French Language Courses

French I, Grades 9-12, 1 Credit

This course provides an introduction to the French language. Its aim is to instruct the students in the essentials of French grammar, composition, conversation and oral practice. Active participation in listening and speaking is fundamental and plays a major part as does understanding of grammatical patterns. Good attendance will ensure this oral practice. Good memorization skills are desirable for better vocabulary development. Some study of the French culture and French influences around the world are included.

French II, Grades 9-12, 1 Credit

Basic concepts from French I are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on development of skills in speaking, aural comprehension, reading and writing. Further vocabulary development and an intense verb study are emphasized through memorization and repetition. Active participation in listening and speaking is fundamental and plays a major part as does understanding of grammatical patterns. Good attendance will ensure this oral practice. Also, the study of French civilization and customs is continued.

French III, Grades 10, 11, 12, 1 Credit

Basic concepts from French I and French II are reviewed. New vocabulary and grammar acquisition continues as it did in French I and II. Active participation in listening and speaking is fundamental and plays a major part as does understanding of grammatical patterns. Good attendance will ensure this oral practice. Students are expected to show knowledge of the concepts both orally and written. Students will read selections in French and will show comprehension and be able to give opinions on the content.

French IV, Grades 11-12, 1 Credit

Basic concepts from the previous levels are reviewed. Students will expand their vocabulary and will fine-tune previously studied grammar concepts. Students will communicate using new concepts such as: demonstrative and interrogative pronouns, comparisons, prepositions with geographical places and infinitives, future, the past perfect, and conditional tenses and the subjunctive mood, as well as sequence of tenses. Students are expected to communicate in French as much as possible.

Students will apply thematic and grammar concepts to compose writing pieces and understand reading selections. Active participation in listening and speaking is fundamental and plays a major part as does understanding of grammatical patterns. As in previous levels, memorization skills are necessary for vocabulary development.

Spanish IV, Grades 11-12, 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Spanish III

Good attendance is essential. Composition writing is emphasized. As in previous levels, memorization skills are necessary for vocabulary enhancement. The study of culture will be continued. Selected readings in Spanish literature are used for further development of comprehension and composition skills. There will be some plot discussion in Spanish.

AP Spanish, Grades 11-12, 1 Credit

The AP Spanish Language course engages students in an exploration of the Spanish language and culture through both contemporary and historical contexts. The course develops students’ awareness and appreciation of products, both tangible (e.g., tools, books) and intangible (e.g., laws, conventions, institutions); practices (patterns of social interactions within a culture); and perspectives (values, attitudes, and assumptions) that underlie both practices and products. Their is a heavy emphasis on reading authentic texts , listening to authentic audio and being able to use the language on an impromptu basis.
