In order to be eligible to participate in athletics in grades 9-12, a student must:
Be currently enrolled and must have been enrolled in school the immediately preceding grading period.
Have received, during the preceding grading period, passing grades in a minimum of five courses, totaling at least 2.5 credits for a semester. (Physical Education courses cannot be used to meet this requirement)
Have attained, during the preceding grading period, a minimum grade point average of 1.3.
Eligibility to participate in fall sports is determined by grades earned in the 4th grading period of the preceding school year. A student enrolled in the first grading period after advancement from the 8th grade must have passed 75% of those subjects taken in the preceding grading period in which the student was enrolled.
In order to participate in commencement, students must meet all credit requirements established by the West Clermont Board of Education. Students who do not meet these requirements, regardless of the reason, will not be permitted to participate in the commencement ceremonies. Throughout the school year, school personnel work with students who may be at risk of not graduating. Parents are also contacted regularly if the chance exists that their child will not graduate on time. However, it remains the primary responsibility of the student to make sure all graduation requirements are met and to notify his/her parents if an academic problem exists which may impede commencement participation.
All course fees indicated are estimates. Additional fees may be assessed by the Board of Education. Course fees are listed on the student’s schedule and cover the cost of materials used in each class. Non-payment of fees can result in the student losing eligibility to participate in school activities and events up to, and including, graduation ceremonies.
Students should discuss credit recovery options with their counselor to help decide which method is right for them. Students who have failed a course may enroll in an accredited summer, evening, or correspondence school program. Student must receive approval from their counselor before enrolling in an accredited program. Students who are participating in credit recovery courses must complete all work by May 1st if the student plans to participate in graduation ceremonies that year.
Students who are interested in graduating in less than four years of regular school attendance must file a written request with the principal. Students must meet with their guidance counselor to discuss their plans for early graduation. A student who graduates early is permitted to participate in the commencement ceremonies at the conclusion of the school year. Students who do not wish to participate in commencement will receive their diploma after the ceremony takes place.
All students in grades 11 and 12 must be enrolled in 5 credit-bearing classes each semester. Juniors and seniors may choose early release each semester in place of study hall. Students must have a parent permission form completed in PowerSchool. Students who are credit deficient or have academic concerns will not be eligible for early release, as they will need to address these needs instead of taking a Study Hall as part of their day.
Students are required to provide their own transportation to and from school. A student scheduled for early release is required to leave campus after their last scheduled class. Any early-release student who is on campus after their last class will be required to report to study hall for the remainder of the class period. Students must leave campus, and are not permitted to be outside the building or in the parking lot during these times.
Seniors looking for more flexibility in their schedule can add Career Based Learning as part of their day. See this page for more information.
College Credit Plus (see CCP page for more information): High school students have an option of enrolling in college courses for college credit or both high school and college credit. Students who intend to participate in this program must submit their “letter of intent to participate” form to their counselor by April 1st.
Credit Flexibility: Students may earn credit by pursuing one or more educational options in accordance with the district’s Credit Flexibility program.
Courses for students who fail to complete the course request process will be scheduled by the student’s counselor. These selections are considered final unless the student requests a change prior to the end of the school year.
Semester grades (percentages) in all courses earning letter grades are used to determine a student’s grade point average (GPA), the basis of class rank. Class rank is determined at the conclusion of each semester by using GPA and ranking students numerically. The following scale is used to determine a student’s grade point average:
Students attending one of the Great Oaks Career campuses must meet the West Clermont requirements to graduate. Great Oaks students should earn the following credits prior to the 11th grade. Students will earn the remainder of the credits needed for graduation from West Clermont HS while attending the Great Oaks Campus.
All students who successfully complete Spanish I, French I, Algebra I or Honors Geometry while attending WCMS will receive one high school credit in each course. The grade and the credit will be included on the high school transcript and will be averaged into the high school grade point average. Transfer students must provide verification that these courses were taken for high school credit at the school where the credit was earned.
Students who successfully complete a combination of any two seasons of athletics are exempt from the physical education requirement for graduation. Students who participate in a combination of any two seasons of marching band are also exempt. To meet elective requirements for graduation, students who take this exemption must replace the elective credit with a 0.5 credit course in order to meet the 20 credit minimum for graduation.
When a student repeats a subject previously failed, the grade earned upon repeating the class will become part of the student’s transcript as well as the original “F.” Both grades will become part of the student’s GPA.
Selecting classes for the next school year is an important decision. Because schedule changes can have a significant effect on class size, the availability of staff, and the number of textbooks, students should plan carefully. To assist you in this process, the list of courses selected and anticipated fees will be sent home to each student in the spring. Please review these carefully and make any desired changes during this verification process, realizing that schedule changes after the last day of school will be limited.
Schedule changes will be permitted for the following reasons:
The school has made a scheduling error.
A class needed to meet graduation requirements is not scheduled.
A prerequisite has not been completed.
A student previously failed a course with the same teacher (if space allows for the change).
A student wants to replace a study hall with an academic class (class must be added before the 10th day of the semester).
The teacher, counselor, and parent agree that the student has been placed in the wrong course.
NOTE: Schedule changes processed for reasons not listed above may result in a withdrawn fail (WF). Students may have no more than one study hall in their schedule each semester. Any student requesting to drop a course will be required to choose another class in its place if the student already has a study hall in his/her schedule.
Because of the tight nature of resources and available course options, schedule changes are not permitted for the following reasons:
preference for a teacher.
a student who changes his/her mind about taking a course.
preference for a certain class period or lunch schedule.
No student shall be eligible for graduation honors, such as valedictorian, unless they have been enrolled for four (4) consecutive semesters prior to the final semester utilized for the purpose of determining such honors.
West Clermont High School offers two tiers of weighted courses. Classes in the highest tier are weighted .025 and classes in the second tier are weighted .0125. This weight is added at the conclusion of the semester to the grade point average upon successful completion of the course.
College credit courses will be weighted if the district weights courses in the same content area/course. See your counselor for additional information on weighted credit and college credit plus courses. The grades and class rank of students who are new to the WCLSD will be converted to this system. Only those classes weighted at WCLSD will be weighted in determining the student’s GPA.
