Program of Studies - Health and Physical Education

Sports Management, Grades 11-12, .5 Credit (*Does not satisfy PE requirement for graduation)

Students must complete 0.5 credit (2 semesters) of Physical Education in order to earn a high school diploma. This can be earned through any combination of Physical Education courses listed below. Students at West Clermont must also complete Health in high school in order to earn a high school diploma. Students are expected to complete Health in 9th grade, unless there is a conflict in the schedule that prevents the student from taking Health. Courses taken beyond 0.5 credit in each area will be counted as electives toward meeting graduation requirements.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXEMPTION

Students who successfully complete a combination of any two seasons of athletics are exempt from the physical education requirement for graduation. Students who participate in a combination of any two seasons of marching band are also exempt. To meet elective requirements for graduation, students who take this exemption must replace that elective credit with a 0.5 credit course.

Health

Independent Living & Wellness, Grades 11-12, 0.5 Credit

Prerequisite: None

Independent Living is a course designed to help you survive and thrive in life after high school. A wide variety of topics will be covered from basic home care, planning for the future, self sufficiency and wellness, and more. Seniors will receive first choice in enrollment, but juniors may also select this course.

With the health of Americans becoming personal, community, national and global issues with individuals and families impacted, this course is designed to meet the ever-growing field of health. Based upon up-to-date health information, content in this class will shift to address this field’s current issues and discoveries. Common content each class will focus on includes: personal wellness, mental health, healthy decision making, American health trends, First AID and CPR, human reproduction, internet and relationship safety, community and environmental health, nutrition, drugs and addictions, and body systems. Students will work individually and in groups and with the use of instructional technology. Students are expected to complete this course in 9th grade unless there is a conflict in their schedule.

Physical Education Courses

Foundations of Strength Training, Grades 9-12, 0.25 Credit

Prerequisite: None

Course Fee $10.00

This course is designed to give students the fundamentals of strength training. Students will utilize free weights, resistance bands, and body-weight exercises to build strength, conditioning and a foundation for advanced training. This class will introduce a variety of styles such as Triphasic Training, CrossFit, and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) methodologies. All participants will leave with the knowledge of programming fitness for a healthy lifestyle. THIS COURSE INCLUDES REQUIRED DAILY PARTICIPATION IN THE CLASS PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES.

Nutrition and Wellness, Grades 9-12, 0.25 Credit

Course Fee $10.00

The students will be focused on low-impact, lifelong fitness which includes walking/jogging, increasing flexibility, and the use of body weight to build strength. The students will be required to have their vitals tested multiple times through the semester including aspects of body composition by the certified instructor and/or registered nurse. THIS COURSE INCLUDES REQUIRED PARTICIPATION IN THE CLASS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.

Recreational Sports and Fitness, Grades 9-12, 0.25 Credit

This class is aimed at the development of knowledge and appreciation of physical activity and personal fitness. Through participation in a wide variety of physical activities, the students will have a better understanding of recreational sports and the fitness benefits of activity. During the class the student’s focus will be on learning to increase their strength, flexibility, and overall fitness level through involvement in both academic and physical class activities. PARTICIPATION IN ACTIVITIES ARE REQUIREMENTS for this class. Units include: swimming, tennis, pickleball, badminton, ping pong, frisbee golf, bowling, cornhole and bocce ball, and fitness planning.

Team Sports, Grades 9-12, 0.25 Credit

Classes are aimed at life-long appreciation of participating in team sports for physical activity and personal fitness. This class focuses on team sports (both learning concepts and participation as a member of a class team), developing team building skills and practicing sportsmanship. ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IS A REQUIREMENT for this class. Units include soccer, football, softball, lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, and speedball.

Mind and Body, Grades 10-12, 0.25 Credit

Prerequisite: 0.25 credit of HS Physical Education completed

Mind & Body is designed to give students a different perspective on Physical Education that focuses on how to improve a students mental health through physical activity. The class will consist of activities in the classroom and outdoors such as mindfulness, yoga, pilates, weight room, fitness and various other exercises and techniques to improve mental and physical well-being. THIS COURSE INCLUDES REQUIRED DAILY PARTICIPATION IN THE CLASS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.

Sports Management, Grades 11-12, .5 Credit (*Does not satisfy PE requirement for graduation)

Prerequisite: 0.25 credit of HS Physical Education and health completed with a C or better in both classes

Course Fee: $20

Course Description: Sport Management gives an oversight of every aspect involved in sport or physical activity. Students will engage in skills related to sports financing, sports marketing, coaching, athletic training, game day management, implementing and designing practice plans, resume building and much more. Students will be able to take skills related to sport and use them as they look at future careers.
