Program of Studies - Project Lead the Way Engineering

Students in this program have the opportunity to join the Technology Student Association. 230,000 middle and high school students nationwide aspire to be future engineers, scientists and technologists through the Technology Student Association. The program provides leadership and opportunities in technology, innovation, design and engineering. Engineering Essentials- (Exploratory Level), Grades 9-12, 1 Credit

Prerequisite: No prerequisites; students are highly recommended to start with this course

Engineering Essentials is a foundational course, students will: Explore the various disciplines within the engineering field and how they apply to today’s world and future career opportunities. (Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, 3D Design and Printing, Coding, Engineering Design Process, Digital Electronics, and Urban Planning) Throughout the course, students explore global engineering challenges and sustainability goals, the impact of engineering, and the variety of career paths available to them. Students who meet Project Lead the Way (PLTW) end-of-course criteria may purchase optional college credit for the course. It is highly recommended that students start with this course.

Engineering I - Introduction to Engineering Design, Grades 9-12, 1 Credit

Prerequisite: B or better in Algebra I OR the likelihood of a B or better if co-enrolled in Algebra I

Introduction to Engineering Design is the first course in a sequence of four courses which follows the national Project Lead the Way curriculum. Students use a problem-solving model to improve existing products and invent new ones. They learn how to apply this model to solve problems in and out of the classroom. Using sophisticated three-dimensional modeling software, students communicate the details of the products. Emphasis is placed on analyzing potential solutions and communicating ideas to others. Students who meet Project Lead the Way (PLTW) end-of-course criteria may also purchase optional college credit for this course at selected colleges nationwide. Three FREE college credit hours are available for this course if used in an Ohio engineering college that has a 3D modelling class. Only available to those who complete all three courses Engineering 1, Engineering 2, and Digital Electronics.

Engineering II - Principles of Engineering, Grades 10-12, 1 Credit

Principles of Engineering exposes students to major concepts they will encounter in a postsecondary engineering course of study. Students employ engineering and scientific concepts in the solutions of engineering design problems. They develop problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge of research and design to create solutions to various challenges, documenting their work and communicating solutions to peers and members of the professional community. Students who meet Project Lead the Way (PLTW) end-of-course criteria may purchase optional college credit for this course. Three FREE college credit hours are available for this course if used in an Ohio engineering college that has a 3D modelling class. Only available to those who complete all three courses Engineering 1, Engineering 2, and Digital Electronics.

Digital Electronics, Grades 11-12, 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Two previous Engineering courses

From smartphones to appliances, digital circuits are all around us. This course provides a foundation for students who are interested in electrical engineering, electronics, or circuit design. Students study topics such as combinational and sequential logic and are exposed to circuit design tools, used in industry, including logic gates, integrated circuits, and programmable logic devices. Students who meet Project Lead the Way (PLTW) end-of-course criteria may purchase optional college credit for this course. This course may be taken concurrently with Engineering II - Principles of Engineering. Three FREE college credit hours are available for this course if used in an Ohio engineering college that has a 3D modelling class. Only available to those who complete all three courses Engineering 1, Engineering 2, and Digital Electronics.

Introduction to Mechanical Engineering - MET 100 Cincinnati State , 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Engineering I and meet all criteria for acceptance as a CCP student (see CCP Handbook)

An orientation to the Mechanical Engineering Technology program and the profession.

Topics include: computers and software used in the profession, career opportunities, professional skills, and preparation for cooperative education.

Digital Electronics - EET 121 Cincinnati State Grades 11-12, 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Two previous Engineering courses and meet all criteria for acceptance as a CCP student (see CCP Handbook)

A course on analyzing, designing, and troubleshooting digital logic circuits. Topics include: basic gates and programmable logic devices (PLDs); number systems and codes; Boolean algebra; circuit simplification; and functions of logic circuits, latches, flip-flops, counters, timers, and memory.

Capstone: Engineering Design and Development, Grade 12, 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Two previous Engineering courses OR One previous Engineering course with both Chemistry and Physics and a Teacher Recommendation

The knowledge and skills students acquire throughout PLTW Engineering come together in Engineering Design and Development (EDD) as they identify an issue and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their solution to a panel of engineers. Students apply the professional skills they have developed to document a design process to standards, completing Engineering Design and Development ready to take on any post-secondary program or career.
