Program of Studies - Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science

Enrollment in this program allows students the opportunity to join HOSA. HOSA is an international student organization that promotes career opportunities in the health care industry and enhances the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, postsecondary, adult, and collegiate students enrolled in health science education and biomedical science programs or have interests in pursuing careers in health professions. Biomedical Science I: Principles of Biomedical Science, Grades 9-10, 1 Credit

Prerequisite: 9th grade Must be co-enrolled in Biology Prerequisite: 10th grade Must have earned a B or better in 9th grade science course (Honors Biology or Physical Science)

This is the first course in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Science pathway. Students explore biology and medicine as they take on roles of different medical professionals to solve real-world problems. Students are challenged in various scenarios including investigating a crime scene to solve a mystery, diagnosing and proposing treatment to patients, containing a medical outbreak, stabilizing a patient during an emergency, and collaborating with others to design solutions to local and global medical problems. Students who meet PLTW end-of-course criteria (B or better in the course and a score of accomplished or higher on the End of Course Assessment) may purchase optional college credit for this course.

Biomedical Science II: Human Body Systems, Grades 10-12, 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Biomedical Science I

This is the second course in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Science pathway. Students examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration. Exploring science in actions, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through interesting real-world cases and often play the roles of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries. Students who meet PLTW end-of-course criteria (B or better in the course and a score of accomplished or higher on the End of Course Assessment) may purchase optional college credit for this course.

Biomedical Science III: Medical Interventions, Grades 11-12, 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Biomedical Science II

This is the third course in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Science pathway. Students follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Students explore how to detect and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; evaluate cancer treatment options; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through real-world cases, students are exposed to a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices and diagnostics. Students who meet PLTW end-of-course criteria (B or better in the course and a score of accomplished or higher on the End of Course Assessment) may purchase optional college credit for this course.

Biomedical Science IV: Capstone - Biomedical Innovation, Grade 12, 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Biomedical Science III

This is the fourth course in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Science pathway. Students will apply their knowledge and skills to answer questions or solve problems related to the Biomedical Sciences. Students design innovative solutions for the health challenges of the 21st century as they work through progressively challenging open-ended problems, addressing topics such as clinical medicine, physiology, biomedical engineering, and public health. Students will complete a senior project and present them at our Senior Showcase which takes place in the spring. Students will have the opportunity to discuss their projects with parents and members of the local community. Students who meet PLTW end-of-course criteria (B or better in the course) may purchase optional college credit for this course.
