Program of Studies - Teacher Academy

This two-year program gives students an inside view of what it takes to become an educator. Beginning in year one with classroom instruction on characteristics of great teachers and learning environments, students will progress in year two to working side by side with a teacher in the classroom. A significant component of the Teacher Academy is this internship, which will expose students to authentic teaching experiences with a WCSD teacher.

Junior Course - Year One

Foundations of Teaching and Learning, Grade 11, 1 Credit

Pre-requisite: NoneCo-Requisite: Supportive Peer is highly recommended as a co-requisite for students in this course

Course Fee: $20

Foundations of Teaching and Learning is an introductory course where students will examine the characteristics of great teachers and successful classrooms through collaboration and communication. This course is suitable for students considering careers in the teaching profession or for those interested in discovering more about public education in the United States. Studying the historical, cultural, philosophical, practical, and social aspects of the educational system will encourage students to consider their own beliefs and values.

Junior Course - CCP Course

EDST 1001 Historical Foundations in Education, Grade 11, 1 Credit

Pre-requisite: Course is taken in 11th grade during second semester - must be enrolled in Teacher AcademyCo-Requisite: Supportive Peer is highly recommended as a co-requisite for students in this course

Course Fee: $25

Description: Historical Foundations in Education is an undergraduate course that provides knowledge about, and critical analysis of, the development and structure of schooling and teaching in the United States. It explores teaching as a profession; school governance and finance; issues of practice; historical, socio-cultural, philosophical, political, and legal foundations of education; and current educational reform. This course requires 10 hours of field experience outside of class.

Senior Courses - Year Two

These courses will be scheduled back to back at the end of the day to make internships in other buildings possible. Students must have mid-day transportation to their internship. Students taking these courses should not request Early Release as they will be scheduled at the same time.

Teaching and Learning Internship, Grade 12, 1 Credit

Pre-requisite: Foundation of Teaching and LearningCo-requisite: Teaching and Learning Explore

Course Fee: $20

Teaching and Learning: INTERNSHIP is one of two senior-year courses in the Teacher Academy Program. Students will take part in authentic teaching experiences through an internship at a West Clermont elementary school or the middle school. Students will develop skills for success in a professional setting while working with our younger community of learners. This course is appropriate for students considering careers in the teaching profession or for those interested in helping others.

Teaching and Learning Explore, Grade 12, 1 Credit

Pre-requisite: Foundation of Teaching and LearningCo-requisite: Teaching and Learning Internship

Course Fee: $20

Teaching & Learning: EXPLORE is one of two senior year courses in the Teacher Academy Program. Students will examine best practices in education through research and through their experiences during the internship.
