As a commuter school of over 29,000 students, faculty, and staff, transportation is by and large the greatest emissions source for SMCCCD. Creating and incentivizing more sustainable transportation options, as well as decarbonizing the District fleet, is crucial to achieving our sustainability goals.
SMCCCD is making plans to provide accessible and affordable transportation for everyone in the community. Transportation equity services include offering transportation resources such as transit passes, carpooling incentives, and even hybrid courses to limit student/staff burden stemming from commutes.
As the EV market continues to grow, SMCCCD is committed to increasing EV charging stations to keep up with the demand of clean and green commuting.
To help incentivize electric vehicles, all students, staff, and faculty qualify for four free hours of electric vehicle charging.
Polaris GEMs, an electric low-speed vehicle now used by janitorial and facilities staff.
To remain ahead of state regulations, as well as realize cost savings, lower emissions, and user health benefits, the District is transitioning to an electric vehicle fleet.
As of 2022, much of the District's vehicle electrification efforts have centered around low-speed electric vehicles like the Polaris GEMs. Moving forward, the District looks to transition its medium- and heavy-duty fleet vehicles to electric as well.
