Campus Engagement

Overview

SMCCCD is committed to engaging its students, faculty, and staff on environmental awareness and sustainability initiatives. Sustainability is communicated through various District-wide and campus in-person and media channels.

Our Goals

1) Facilitate participation in campus sustainability efforts and awareness of sustainability issues

Integrating Equity into Campus Engagement

Equity is a huge priority when engaging with our campus community. Any outreach or engagement involves working with as many student organizations and groups as possible to ensure we reach a wide range of students.

Through our programs, we also customize engagement opportunities for each student to accommodate a wide range of needs and schedules to make sure everyone can get involved, and that all student voices and stories are elevated.

Featured Projects

Sustainability Career Center

SMCCCD is proud to be working with Peninsula Clean Energy, the local electricity provider for San Mateo County, as a funder of the new Sustainability Career Center coming Spring 2024! Five student assistants, working under the supervision of our Project Engineer Joseph Puckett, will be designing and fabricating interactive, clean energy-focused exhibits to educate our community. These exhibits will be based on the Museum of Tomorrow model, which has been proven to increase commitment to sustainable behavioral change.

Stay tuned for more information on the new Sustainability Career Center coming soon! We hope that you visit our physical location at Cañada College and interact with our exhibits and community events.

Energize Colleges

One of the ways the Sustainability Team interacts closely with students is through the Energize Colleges program. This program provides our students with paid internship experience in the field of energy and sustainability, and close mentorship from the Sustainability Team. Each year, interns take on sustainability projects on their own campuses. Interns also partner with community-based organizations, strengthening the connection between the SMCCCD campuses and the San Mateo community. Sustainability Committees

To promote interdisciplinary collaboration, each campus has its own sustainability committee made up of faculty and staff interested in making a difference. Want to find out about events, programs, and clubs around sustainability happening on your campus? Connect with your campus sustainability chair, or contact us to join the District Sustainability Committee!

Members of the 2018 District Sustainability Committee gather outside the District Office.
