Each Friday, Mrs. Andrade uses Flipgrid as a way for students to summarize, analyze and provide their argument on whether they are for or against the main argument of an assigned reading article.
Assignment Overview: Students are tasked to find a non-fiction newspaper or magazine editorial to analyze about a current event or issue pertaining to an assigned topic.
Objective: The Current Events Article Analysis Assignment will improve students’ summarizing, analyzing, citation, and grammatical skills. It will keep students abreast of current events and breaking news, enhancing their critical thinking skills and providing them with a wealth of knowledge to incorporate into future writing.
Flipgrid Specifics: After students write their analysis of the article, students will share the main argument of their article and discuss the evidence that was used to support the thesis. Students will then explain to their peers whether they agreed or disagreed with the argument and why. Students are also required to respond to a minimum of 2 Flipgrid posts by other students. The responses should show thought and add meaning to the post.
Mrs. Andrade explains the assignment.
*Note:
Students must keep their Flipgrid post under 5 minutes.
When students are responding to the assignment or to another student, they have the choice to have their cameras turned 'on' while recording themselves. You will see some students turn their camera to an object or the wall and others will not have their cameras turned on at all, hence the black screens.
