Elementary
Akwaaba, campers! In Week 5 (July 13-17) our Elementary explorers will travel to Ghana in West Africa to discover vibrant traditions, music, storytelling, and art. Campers will learn about the ancient Ghana Empire, the importance of gold and trade routes, and the colorful cultural traditions that continue in Ghana today. Through classic Anansi the Spider folktales and stories about West African life, students will explore the creativity, rhythm, and storytelling traditions of the region.
Stories & Culture: Anansi the Spider folktales and stories about the ancient Ghana Empire, gold trade, and life in West Africa
Art & Creativity: Kente cloth inspired paper weaving, Adinkra symbol printing, bead making, and mask art
Music & Movement: Drumming, call-and-response songs, and traditional dance inspired by Ghanaian rhythms
Gross Motor Activities: Ampe (traditional clapping and jumping game), soccer, relay races, and rhythm games
Food & Taste: Jollof rice, fried plantains, rice balls, peanut snacks, and fresh fruit
STEM Fun: Explore patterns and symmetry in Kente cloth designs, investigate rhythm and sound through drumming, and learn map geography of West Africa
Campers will experience the vibrant colors, music, stories, and traditions of Ghana while building creativity, movement skills, and cultural understanding.
