My goal for group work in science is many different things, here are some in categories. My goal for taking ownership is to be able to consistently use the computers and apps in a successful and agreed upon manner. The second part of my goal is Being Helpful. It is to give more useful and specific feedback which makes projects work more feasible while I am being kind and supportive. Another goal for me that is not in the rubric is to take constructive feedback better.
During this exciting lab we used starburst to replicate the rock cycle. First we removed the rapping and created sediment by cutting three different color starbursts with scissors and putting it into a pile. We then put the rock pieces into a plastic bag and squashed it with our palms, creating sedimentary rock. To turn the starbursts into igneous rock we kept it in the bag, and placed it into a mug of boiling water. It then melted after a minute of being in the water and became an igneous rock. We took the cooled igneous rock and placed it on parchment paper, ironed it, and watched the satisfying end of the starbursts. It turned out that the rock was squished, bubbling and steaming hot. We then re-did the cycle, cutting the metamorphic rock into sediment.
During this lab we used several sugary treats such as rice krispies and chocolate chips to display different types of plate tectonics. This lab taught me a lot. I learned about continental subduction and oceanic subduction. I also learned about convergent and divergent boundaries, this lab was very helpful. The lab helped me understand plate tectonics more by explaining the different types of way that tectonics can happen and their consequences. Overall this lab was really fun!
While creating the slideshow needed to present our geological presentation, I worked on different things specific to my main subject: Horseshoe bend, AZ. I did the water, geological significance, and more. I put several different pictures showing the bend. This was a very entertaining project.
As the first exhibition project is coming to a close, I wrote a reflection on what I created and how it helped my learning. One of the types of things that I learned about and mastered is my collaboration with teamwork skills. At the beginning of the year, I was very skeptical about group projects and working with other people. Now, I have learned that group projects can be easier than single project and even fun. Another topic I have grown in is my interpretation of rock layers. I made a rock wall out of clay and wood and used it to symbolize the rock layers, and it did this accurately and specifically. I am very proud, overall, of this exhibition and the growth that came with it.

In the second science unit of my sixth grade year the learning target was: “I can Analyze data to determine the size and scale properties of objects in the solar system.” I definitely passed the exhibition and did the learning target because I got an exceeds on my project rubric. In the project I think my insight and how I can explain the planets and how they work has gotten insanely better during this project. For collaboration and teamwork, one of my partners was very difficult to work with because we do not agree on a lot of things. My role in the creation of our model was to paint the model tan, brown and white while one of my other partners created the place for it to go. Effective communication was key in this project, even though one of my partners struggled with taking charge and directing themself. I think in the future it would be more helpful to assign group members jobs. In the beginning of our presentation, there was a glitch with my computer so I had to wait for a few minutes in order to get the video working. Speaking of my video, I worked during lunch on it for 4 days, two of which my helpful partner was there and my other (not helpful) partner was there only for recording and they were complaining the whole time about wanting to go to lunch and the exhibition not being important. The biggest lesson that this project has taught me is partners and group projects will not be the best but some parts of it are great. My appreciation for being able to learn about space and get interested in it has stayed the same, this unit wasn’t very interesting but it was definitely a space for growing in my education. Overall, I passed the exhibition with flying colors with an exceeds.
My project was Ocean Pollution in my community, of course we don't have an ocean so we talked about the river instead. Me and Lani's plan was to go to the river after we wrote our script and everything and pick up trash which we would then make into a trash otter. This worked out very well and we picked up about 3 bags of trash. A half of one of those bags was used to make the otter you see ------------------------------------------------------------------>
During this project I discovered that a lot of communication and teamwork is needed to be able to make a great project that deserved a meets. I feel like I put a lot of effort into this project with the slides and such. I'm very proud of the otter as it took time to collect the trash and make the otter during art class. It seemed as if we weren't going to be able to communicate through parents and figure out how to go to the river to get trash, but it all worked out. During this project my understanding of how environmental disasters worked changed very little. I knew they had big affects from humans and climate change and learning about the ocean pollution only made it more true.
