Esmond completed an MSc in Manufacturing Engineering & Management and a PhD in Knowledge Engineering at the University of Nottingham. After a postdoctoral role, he joined Loughborough University, where his research centred on knowledge management, interoperability, and ontology design for defence and aerospace, contributing to the international standard ISO 20534. Returning to Nottingham in 2020, Esmond played a key role in the CO-CONNECT project, applying the OMOP common data model to harmonise national COVID-19 datasets and co-developing a national serology data standard with NPEx and the NHS. He also collaborated with the University of Dundee to develop the CO-CONNECT structured healthcare vocabulary, supporting healthcare terminology standardisation and MIABIS specimen concepts. He now works with the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, focusing on healthcare data engineering, standardisation, and interoperability.
James is the inaugural Chair of Digital Health at La Trobe University, where he leads the university’s Digital Health strategy to tackle inefficiencies in healthcare caused by fragmented information systems. With over 25 years of experience in working with large, linked population health datasets, he is an international expert in data linkage and a pioneer of the Privacy-preserving Record Linkage (PPRL) methodology, which has enabled numerous projects, particularly in chronic disease research. His work supports innovation in both the public and private sectors, advancing preventative medicine and digital health solutions. Over the past decade, Professor Boyd has been at the global forefront of developing digital platforms for virtual care and remote monitoring, including a successful collaboration with Northern Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic to create a virtual emergency department model that has since been scaled to a state-wide service, enhancing patient access and healthcare delivery through digital technology.
