River Avenue District, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The River Avenue District is located on the northern shore of Pittsburgh just east of the Sixteenth Street Bridge (David McCullough Bridge.) The site today consists of mostly barren land and abandoned parking lots leftover from the Heinz Industrial Complex that once inhabited a majority of the site. Now this site must be reinvisioned to create a community for the future.
Project Title: The Walkability Enhancement
Location: River Avenue District, Pittsburgh, PA
Course: Larc 450 Advanced Architectural Design 1
Designer: Kurt Moyer
The Walkability Enhancement Project focuses on transforming the River Avenue District of Pittsburgh into a neighborhood that supports the growth of the community through shared public spaces, job opportunities, increased walkability, and sustainable design.
The layout is centralized around the creation of a superblock from Chestnut St, S Canal Street, Warfield St, and River Ave. Inside this superblock is various mixed-use, commercial, retail/gastronomy, residential, and office buildings. These buildings help to create a self sustainable community with the new influx of jobs and housing opportunities. The new growth is driven with sustainable design in mind and is prevelant with the focus on how to capture stormwater onsite and retain it in order to decrease runoff and help with the site's ecological footprint. The superblock formation makes the site pedestrian oriented which will help to bring in a new influx of visitors to the site, and enhance the walkability through the main corridor.

The Masterplan gives a great visual of how the overall layout works with the creation of the superblock. The planted pocket parks create areas for residents and visitors to escape the city environment into a more natural setting. These areas are especially important for heavily dense urban settings such as Pittsburgh and its surrounding neighborhoods such as the River Avenue District.
